  2. February 22 • Tyrant- ruler who exercises power in a harsh cruel way • Ex. Bennie called her mom a tyrant after her mom slapped her. • Ledger-n- a book used to record accounts and records • Ex. Mama didn’t want the liquor store on her • ledger when she got to heaven.

  3. February 25 • Vindicated- justified and proven right • Ex. After the boy who bullied her got arrested, she felt vindicated. • Raucous- harsh sounding, loud • Ex. After the teacher walked into the haul there was a huge raucous noise in the room. It was Seth throwing Skittles around.

  4. Feb 26 • Mutilate • Ex. Maim or damage • Ex. The mutilated animal on the side of the road filled everyone with sadness. • Assimilate- blend in with another culture • Ex. The Martians tried to assimilate into the Earth ways so no one would know they were trying to take over the world.

  5. Feb 27 • Cliché- a trite or over used expression or idea • Ex. Mrs. Shriver hates when we use cliches in our essays. • Coquettishly- in a manner befitting a woman who flirts with men • Ex. Although she wasn’t after a boyfriend, the girl loved being a coquette.

  6. February 28 • Menace- a threat • Ex. She tried to give him a. menacing look, but he just laughed. • Scrutinize- examine in detail • Ex. After great scrutiny, the teacher determined the student did not plagiarize.

  7. February 29 • Amiable- good. Natured • Ex. Her amiable nature made her fun to have in a group. • Rebuff- refuse • Ex. He tried and tried to get her to go on a date, but she continuously rebuffed his offers.

  8. March 4 • Agitation- emotional disturbance • Ex. She was so agitated after her conversation with her boyfriend, that I wondered what they talked about. • Enunciate- speak clearly and distinctly • Ex. The person on the cd did not enunciate his words clearly so I couldn’t understand what it said.

  9. March 5 • Presumably- probably, reasonably supposed • Ex. I presumed we’d have a vocabulary test before Spring Break, but Mrs. Shriver has pushed it to after the break. • Flippant- to not be serious about something, often something you should be serious about. • Ex. Joel acted flippant about his grades all nine-weeks until one week before the end of the nine-weeks, and then he started to worry.

  10. March 6 • Ails- pains or makes ill • Ex. What ails you today, Alyssa? • Lingers- waits around, moves slowly • Ex. Alex lingered around after class to catch up with the girl who was in the next classroom and hadn’t left yet.

  11. March 7 • Precarious- placed in a dangerous place • Ex. She leaned back in her chair so precariously that I thought she was going to fall. • Plunder- steal, take forcefully • Can also be a noun meaning the stuff you stole • Ex. In the medieval days, armies would invade villages and plunder everything. • Ex. I looked in his backpack at all the plunder and knew this kid was a thief. • Last words on this testing cycle.
