  2. OVERVIEW • Analgesics (pain killers) are a very well known group of drugs that include aspirin, acetaminophen (Tylenol), and ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil, and Midiron). In addition to their analgesic properties, ibuprofen and aspirin are members of the no steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAI) group of drugs and are thus used to reduce swelling and inflammation.

  3. BACKGROUND • Aspirin, acetaminophen, and ibuprofen are some of the most commonly used over-the-counter analgesics. Ibuprofen is perhaps best known as an active ingredient in the brand name drugs Motrin, Advil, Nuprin, and Midiron. • The Boots Company PLC of Nottingham, England (discoverers of ibuprofen) patented a synthesis of ibuprofen (hereafter known as the brown synthesis) in the 1960s (U.S. Patent 3,385,886) that has been the method of choice for the industrial preparation of ibuprofen for many years.
