Anglo-Saxon Invasion Three Germanic tribes – the Angles, the Saxons, and the Jutes - invade the British Isles in the early 5th Century AD OLD ENGLISH 450 AD to 1100 AD The parade helmet found at Sutton Hoo, probably belonging to Raedwald of East Anglia circa 625. Based on a Roman parade-helmet design (of a general class known as spangenhelm), it has decorations like those found in contemporary Swedish helmets found at Old Uppsala (Collection of the British Museum)

  3. Alfred the Great – c. 849 - 899 King of Wessex from 871 to 899. Alfred is noted for his defense of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of southern England against the Vikings, becoming the only English monarch to be accorded the epithet "the Great".

  4. The Norman Invasion – 1066 AD William the Conqueror, from Normandy in France, crosses the English Channel and defeats Harold at the Battle of Hastings. MIDDLE ENGLISH 1100 AD to 1470 AD

  5. FEUDAL SYSTEM The hierarchy of land, power, and service from king to baron to knight to serf.

  6. THE MAGNA CARTA In 1215, King John is forced to sign the “Great Charter” which expressed and protected certain rights of the people and limited the powers of the king.

  7. Johannes Gensfleisch zur Laden zum Gutenberg A German silversmith, goldsmith, printer and publisher who invented the “movable type” printing press in 1450. The first “book” printed was the Bible.

  8. Early Modern English Early Modern English is the language of Shakespeare. It is frequently dated from about 1476 AD – the date of the Caxton printing press. The first book William Caxton printed was an edition of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales.

  9. Great Britain is England, Scotland, and Wales. The United Kingdom includes Northern Ireland
