    15. Year 11 is very.. Short Intense Stressful Rewarding

    16. The Key Issues for the Year Ahead GCSE Examinations : 11th May-30thJune, 2009 - a rewarding but stressful 5 week period that students need to plan and prepare for NOW. Post-16 Option Choices -Considering what to do and where to go after students gets their GCSE Results on August 27th 2009.

    17. GCSEs..its not all about May 2008! Students have large proportions of the following subjects completed in Year 10: - Geography (33 %) - Religious Studies (50%) - Science (Single & Double) (40% & 50%) There will be opportunities to repeat these in Year 11( March for Science & May/June for Geog. & RE) Some Subjects will have their Exams before May 2009 such as Drama & Art.

    18. Coursework For the majority of subjects :there is a 20-40% weighting of coursework. Some of this Coursework has been completed during Year 10. The final Coursework Assignments will be carried out from September until mid-November. September 2008 - February 2009 : Improving & bringing handed in coursework up to the required grade having taken Mock Exam performance into consideration

Mock/Trial Examinations -Just 9 school weeks away Students will complete a full length real GCSE Exam paper It will decide ultimately: What tier entry your child will complete in the May Examinations - Higher (A*-C) - Foundation (C-G) - Not Entered (U or N) Evaluating Revision Techniques Examining closely Exam technique The best form of preparation for the real exams is to analyse and learn from the mistakes in the Mocks. This set of Grades will stay with the student until August 21sth 2009 (References, Interviews, CVs & application Forms) On average pupils should aim to improve their mock exam grade by at least one grade by May. Coursework Improvements can add to this further.

    20. IN THE FORTHCOMING EXAMS WHAT WE ALL WANT TO AVOID: NEAR MISSES!

    21. Study Support-A three-pronged approach! 1. A 9 week programme that in many cases has already started, 4 evenings a week to give students the support they need in : a) Completing their final coursework (Support Surgeries) b) Preparing for Mock Examinations in December (Revision) 2. An 11 week programme starting in January to give students an opportunity to : a) Improve Coursework Grades before despatch to Exam Board b) Prepare for May GCSE Examinations (Revision) 3. An intensive Easter Revision Course run during the Easter Holidays

    22. Study Support Clubs 3-4pm : In Subject lessons attending Coursework or Revision classes 3-4.30pm : Year 11 Study Club in Supervised classrooms with access to ICT facilities completing homework/ coursework assignments Selected students will have a specially tailored timetable and special passports to show that they have attended.

    23. Formatof Study Clubs Open to all Year 11 students An exact timetable will be posted home to all parents week beginning 29th September. Selected students will be required to attend If your child is not selected but you would like them to be please see us afterwards. A clear correlation last year between those students in Year 10 who attended revision/ coursework classes and their exam/ grade performances

    24. Study Club Results 2006 students attended students achieved 5 or more GCSEs A*-C grades (64.6%) students achieved 6 or more GCSEs A*-C grades (47.9%) students achieved 7 or more GCSEs A*-C grades (41.9%)

    25. Study Support Club 2007 20 of the 28 targeted students got their required GCSE Grades Only 1 student didnt get the grades he was targeted to get. The remaining 7 attended sessions in a very erratic way. Once or twice a week out of 4 and they paid the price.

    27. 2008 Thursday, November 27th : Barking Abbey 6th Form Open Afternoon, 2-4 pm 2009 Wednesday, February 4th: Year 11 Parents Evening Friday, April 3rd : Mentoring Day Monday, April 6th- Friday, April 17th: Easter break & Revision Classes. Tuesday, May 20th : Last day in Year 11. Study Leave begins. Monday, May 11th: GCSE Exams begin! Monday, June 29th : Year 11 Prom (Orsett Pavilion) Tuesday, June 30th : End of GCSE Exams Thursday, August 27th,: GCSE RESULTS! Calendar Dates to Remember

    28. GCSEs next May Official Personalised Timetable issued in late February Revision in Lesson time from Mid-March Exam Practice (Past Papers) and improving Exam Techniques from March also (Often set as Homework) Seating Arrangements placed well in advance in Canteen Results available on Thursday, 27th August .

    29. OTHER YEAR 11 ISSUES -Attendance / Punctuality -Uniform - Homework -Time Management / Stress - Reports on-Line

Parental Partnership Please get involved yourselves Parents Evening, 4th February, 2008 Mentoring Day, 4th April 2008 Provide a place to work Help with organisation and time management 2-3 hours work each night Social Activities should be deferred till the Weekend! There is always work to do, for example improving coursework We want next August to be a very happy occasion that will set them up for the rest of their lives!

    31. Year 11 2007-8 77% A* - C achieved 20 regular attendees achieved the expected number of grades at A* -C 1 student went from 5 A*-C expected to 11 4 students went from 5 A*-C expected to 9 THESE WERE ALL REGULAR ATTENDEES AT THE CLUB
