Four Criteria for Canonicity (why certain books were eventually accepted into the NT Canon, while others were rejected): Apostolic Origin- attributed to and/or based on the preaching/teaching of the first-generation apostles (or their closest companions). Universal Acceptance- acknowledged by all major Christian communities in the Mediterranean world (by the end of the fourth century). Liturgical Use- read publicly along with the OT when early Christians gathered for the Lord's Supper (their weekly worship services). Consistent Message- containing theological ideas compatible with other accepted Christian writings (incl. the divinity and humanity Jesus).

10. Four-Fold Role of the Evangelists as Authors (what they contributed, even if "God is the Author" of all scripture): 1) Selectors- from among the many things Jesus said and did, they chose which stories they wanted to include and which to omit. 2) Arrangers- they organized the materials in a particular sequence, not necessarily chronologically but often in thematic blocks. 3) Shapers- they adapted and edited the individual stories from their sources so as to emphasize the themes they wanted to stress. 4) Proclaimers- they were not objective historians, but preached the "good news" about Jesus in ways appropriate to their audiences.

So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter.”

12. Many things taught by word of mouth. Not everything given to the early Church was written down. • Jesus didn’t say write a book. • He did found a church. …….. Do this in memory of me • Matthew 16:15-19 “And he said to them, “But who do you say I am. Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the son of the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter and on this rock I will build my church and the powers of death shall not prevail agains it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven.”

13. How many books make up the Bible? The Roman Catholic Church recognizes 73 books – 46 Old Testament and 27 New Testament – as part of the Canon. A canonical book refers to one that the Church acknowledges as belonging to its list of sacred books, as inspired by God, and as having a regulating (rule) value for faith and morals. “God is the author of sacred Scripture because he inspired its human authors; he acts in them and by means of them. He thus gives assurance that their writings teach without error his saving truth.” –DV, n. 11. Most Protestant traditions only regard 39 books of the Old Testament as inspired – the difference centers on Tobit, Judith, 1-2 Maccabees, the Book of Wisdom, Sirach, Baruch, and parts of Esther and Daniel.

Who wrote the Bible? “Holy Mother Church, relying on the belief of the apostles, hold that the books of both the Old and New Testament in their entirety, with all their parts, are sacred and canonical, because, having been written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit (cf. Jn. 20:31; 2 Tim 3:16; 2 Pet 1:19-21; 3:15-16) they have God as their author and have been handed on to the Church herself. In composing the sacred books, God chose men and while employed by him they made use of their powers and abilities, so that with Him acting in them and through them, as true authors, consigned to writing everything and only those things which He wanted.” - DV, n. 11

15. The Church existed without the written form for decades. • Oral tradition has authority.

16. Small “t” tradition • (sung about on Fiddler on the Roof) Cultural traditions. • a) the way we celebrate Mass • b) the vestments that were worn • c) laws on fasting • d) priestly celibacy.

17. Quote Dei Verbum 10 “Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture make up a single sacred deposit of the Word of God which is entrusted to the Church. By adhering to it the entire holy people, united to its pastors remains always faithful to the teaching of the apostles. …………. But the task of giving an authentic interpretation of the Word of God, whether in its written form or in the form of Tradition has been entrusted to the living teaching office of the Church alone.” (i.e. the Magisterium)

18. Some of that was written down. Some remains in the collective memory of the Church. • Sola Scriptura. : if it is not in the bible we won’t believe it. This is a position held by most Protestant denominations. It is not a Catholic teaching. Scripture is essential, as are Tradition and the Magisterium of the Church. • CCC Paragraphs 748-975

This teaching office is not above the word of God but serves it, teaching only what has been handed on, listening to it devoutly, guarding it scrupulously and explaining it faithfully in accord with a divine commission and with the help of the Holy Spirit, it draws from this one repository of faith everything which it presents for belief as divinely revealed.” (Dei Verbum 10)

25. After reviewing each of the sources and Cardinal Oullet’s statement, explain in an academic essay the role of Scripture, Tradition and the Magisterium in the Catholic Church. Explain how they work together. Explain why one is not more important than the other and why. Your answer should include an explanation of how the bible was formed.
