  2. LBS in mobile internet • LBS: Location Based Service • Different from traditional positioning services, e.g. car navigation and cargo tracking, LBS in mobile internet is Location Check-in Service. - Depending on user’s ‘check-in’ behavior. - Users care about what around them more than where they are. - Foursquare.com in US, Digu.com and Jiepang.com in China • General LBS usage steps: Open client software or webpage Localize yourself by GPS etc. Receive multiple locations (e.g. shop, restaurant) Select one location to check Use related services Slide 2

  3. Comparison of popular LBS tech & PAC Slide 3

  4. Comparison of popular LBS tech & PAC • GPS/A-GPS/Base station - inaccurate indoor position / need support of operator’s network / local info in server may not be updated timely  Not good user experience • NFC - very limited transmission range & discovery capability  Not good user experience • 802.15 PAC - inaccurate indoor position  no effect on discovery result - good discovery capability  up-to-date and comprehensive local information - independent from operator’s network  easy to implement Slide 4

  5. PAC features for LBS • Fully distributed coordination • Peer-to-peer communications - Same as social communication in the real world. • Autonomous association • Discovery signaling rate: 100kbps • Number of devices in discovery: >100 • Faster and positive association • Two-way discovery - Support sharing more file types, e.g. microfilm, interactive ad • Data transmission rate: 10 Mbps - Extend simple one-to-one or one-to-group/all model • Group communications: n to m - Reasonable accuracy • Localization: 10m Slide 5

  6. LBS applications • Discover friends nearby • Discover strangers nearby • Share multimedia on the go • Interactive game with people nearby • Game based on real location + virtual scene, e.g. MyTown • Municipal facilities • Commercial facilities • Personalized promotions/Precision marketing • Mobile group buying Slide 6

  7. Chinese LBS market • As the popularity of mobile internet and smart phone, the user number of LBS will be increasing as fast as 290.6% between 2010 and 2013. (by iResearch Inc.) • There will be estimated 81millionusers in 2013. (by iResearch Inc.) • How much share of that big market will 802.15 take? Slide 7

  8. Questions • LBS is a cluster of new applications originated from mobile internet, not mature enough. • For LBS, we need to distinguish what functions 802.15 already has and what functions are still needed. • There are more interference and less unlicensed bands in the populous areas, heavy usage of LBS may cause delay and affect user experience.
