  4. Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test 3rd Grade Reading and Math Tentative Testing Window: March 9-19 FCAT

  5. FCAT Reading Test • Purpose – to measure students’ achievement in constructing meaning from a wide variety of texts • 60% of the test will contain literary text • 40% of the test will contain informational text • Includes two, sixty minute reading tests • All items multiple choice

  6. Reading Levels and Passages • Reading selections will represent a range of reading ability within the grade • Will include reading levels appropriate for both the beginning and end of the grade • Each passage will range between 100-700 words, with an average of 350 words per passage • Average of 6-8 passages • Average of 50-55 questions

Reading - At School Preparation • Macmillan-McGraw Hill Reading Series – weekly selections build phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency • Explicit instruction of reading strategies • Independent Reading – practice phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency • Science & Social Studies reading material – further enhance reading instruction and develop strategies for informational texts • FAIR Testing – to assess all areas of reading • Unit Benchmark Tests – to monitor phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension skills

Reading – At Home Preparation • Monitor your child’s agenda for assignments • Provide time for you child to read at home (15-30 minutes daily) • Listen to your child read and read with your child • Discuss the stories that are read with your child • Visit the public library to check out books • Have your child become an active participant in the Accelerated Reader program • Have your child go online to www.fcatexplorer.com
