  1. Where is Bakersfield? Bakersfield Sacramento Oakland San Francisco Los Angeles San Diego

  2. Membership Recruitment & Retention - Considerations • Good “Speakers” Draw Better • Topic variety – broad vs. specialized. • Safety, Workers Comp, Environmental, others. • Sensitive to seekers/guests.

  3. The Role of Membership Leaders and Scoring Winning Attendance at Meetings • Facilitate networking opportunities between guests and members. • Rule # 2 – Leave Your Egos at home • Pride is like putting water on a camp fire. • New (and old) folks can sense within minutes of attending a meeting if the people are really there so they can tell others how smart they are (or if it's a closed network).

  4. The Role of Membership Leaders and Scoring Winning Attendance at Meetings • Make meetings high energy/enthusiastic • Provide value (fill a need) for folks • In Bakersfield, guests are treated the same as members in many ways - e.g. same low ($12) price for breakfast.

  5. The Role of Membership Leaders and Scoring Winning Attendance at Meetings - Summary • Agenda – Try to have meeting value not solely on speaker/topic • No Room for Egos • Guest/Seeker Focused • Energy • Networking - Lots of Names! • Same Low Price – Guests and Members

  6. Membership & Job Announcement Handout

  7. Membership Retention Reminders • Playing favorites (i.e. catering to high profile board members, etc.) can be a turn off to others. • Personalize communications with members as much as possible. • Do periodic surveys of your least active members – asking their opinion is one way to show you value their membership. • Close the loop on member communications (e.g. acknowledge dues renewals, etc.)
