  4. Government • February 1990 - Ending of Cold War completed by President Reagan’s strong U.S. policies • June 1990 - U.S. President George H.W. Bush and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev sign a treaty eliminating chemical weapon production. • August 1990 - Iraq invades its neighbor, Kuwait, bringing U.S. involvement to the Gulf War • November 1990 - United Nations passes a resolution, #678, stating that Iraq must withdraw its forces from Kuwait by January 15, 1991 or face military intervention. • January 1991 - Operation Desert Storm begins with air strikes against Iraq • October 1991 - William Jefferson Clinton, the governor of Arkansas, announces his plan to run for president in the 1992 election. • May 1992 - The 27th Amendment to the Constitution is passed, to prevent the U.S. Congress from giving itself a pay raise midterm. • November 1992 – Democratic presidential candidate Bill Clinton defeats incumbent President George H.W. Bush. • June 1993 – In response to the Iraqi Secret Service’s attempt to assassinate former president George H.W. Bush , President Clinton ordered a missile strike on the Iraqi Intelligence headquarters in Baghdad.

Government • November 1993 - President Bill Clinton signs The Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act as new legislation. • 1993 - President Clinton signs “Don't ask, don't tell” into law, which prohibits openly gay or bisexual people from serving in the military. • September 1994 - President Bill Clinton signs the Assault Weapons Ban, prohibiting the use of these weapons for ten years. • January 1995 - U.S. President Bill Clinton extends a $20 trillion loan to Mexico to avoid a financial disaster dealing with the Mexican peso and American dollar. • July 1995 – the Korean War Memorial in Washington D.C. is dedicated by President Bill Clinton and South Korean President Kim Yong Sam. • 1995-1996 - A budget crisis forces the federal government to shutdown for several weeks. • November 1996 - President William J. Clinton is re-elected. • March 1997 - Federal funding for research of human cloning is discontinued by President Bill Clinton. • September 1998 - The United States Congress passes legislation, the "Iraq Liberation Act" that states the U.S. wants to remove Saddam Hussein from power and replace it with a democracy • February 1999 - President Bill Clinton is acquitted by the U.S. Senate in the Monica Lewinsky scandal.
