  2. What’s up for the day • Journal • “anyone lived in a pretty how town” e. e. cummings • True Colors personality quiz • Build your own community! For the next few weeks, we will be reading Harper Lee’s canonical To Kill A Mockingbird. This book is a personal favorite of Ms. Fox. Our unit’s theme will be “Local Justice.” Before we can get to justice, we must first tackle the “local” side of the theme. Today we will discover what each of us expects within communities so when we read about Maycomb county, the main character Scout’s community, we can find both the positive and less positive characteristics of her hometown.

  3. Journal: 9/2/2013 • Think about a team or a group you have been apart of that you feel has been successful. What was the team? What was your success? Strategies, plays and logistics aside, why do you think your team gained this success? • 5 minutes to write, please use all the time given! • We will share for a few moments after

All Together Now • As Ms. Fox reads…Continue to circle/underline any phrases that are strange, resonate with you, you believe encompass the message of the poem. • After Ms. Fox reads…You will have a few minutes to select the most important phrase (one line) in the poem.Hint: there are no wrong answers!

  6. Boil it down Look at the phrase you selected and now select the most important words. (3 word maximum) Write on the back of the poem:1. Why you chose these words.2. Could these words be relevant to your life outside of school? Where and why? Or why not?3. You will have five minutes to write.4.. I will be walking around and checking for participation and be available for questions.

  7. Partner with a neighbor and share what you wrote! (5 min) • Class Discussion: What did you come up with?!

  8. True Colors Cyndi Lauper • Need: True Colors Personality Quiz. • Go over directions that are also at top of quiz. • Keep in mind: 4= MOST like you, 1=LEAST like you! • Tally up points, circle HIGHEST number!

  9. Build Your Own Community • Gather with people who are in the same color as you. Send one person to receive a piece of large paper and writing utensils. • For the next 10-15 minutes you will work TOGETHER to build/draw your ideal community or neighborhood. • Focus less on what each house looks like and more on HOW the community will function. • Example: Is there a community pool? Who gets to use it? Or does everyone have their own pool? Is there a curfew? What happens if someone breaks it? • Get Creative!! But keep it *school appropriate* • Other than that, there are no limits… let your imaginations run wild (or not wild, up to you). • We WILL be presenting!
