Republic of Yemen History: Creation of Yemen Northern Yemen: Part of Ottoman empire until 1918, civil wars between Republicans (with Egypt) and monarchist (with Saudi Arabia) Southern Yemen: Colony of UK between 1839 and 1967, then independant country Unification of North and South : in 1990 becomes the “Arabic Republic of Yemen”. From 1990 to now: Some smashed rebellions. Official support of Iraq in the Gulf War but fight against terrorism afterward

Republic of Yemen Politics: Central state Democratic republic with president: Ali Abdullah Saleh since 1990 • Unique Parliament of 301 representatives • A Supreme Court + a Law derived from Islamic law (charia), British law and local usages. The second political party, the Islah, is leaded by Cheikh Abdullah Al-Ahmar. Leader of the Hached tribal confederation.

  9. Republic of Yemen Politics: tribes Yemeni society organised in Tribes, especially for the Northern part. Two main confederations of tribes: Hached and Bakil. A tribe: local organisation founded by an elderly. He is the local authority and represents its people to the Government. →decentralized power They may use violence and terrorist acts to enforce authority.

Training needed. Even in meetings with government officials, participants typically chew khat, a mildly narcotic plant February 21, 2009
