  4. Programmers, database authors and others need to pay the rent

  5. Internet creates opportunities to lower transaction costs

  6. Proposal • Create trusted environment where sellers or buyers can propose transactions. • Projects can be proposed by either buyers or sellers. • Proposals are made, noticed, discussed and refined before being finalized. • Mature proposals move to next step.

  7. Proposal con’t • Buyers/donors who agree with the proposal indicate their willingness to contribute. • Contributions are binding if sufficient matching funds are raised.

  8. Examples • Creation of database on mergers. • New features on OpenOffice. • GPL’d Voting Software. • Hostile Takeover of Corel. • Purchase of BeOS.

  9. Issues • Matching Funds entity role. • Model licenses? • Receive and distribute money when matching funds reach goals. • Manage proposal process. • Choose reliable volunteers to manage due diligence. • Charge commission to be sustainable.
