PGCertHELT The PGCert is a Master’s degree level course • at Scottish Credits and Qualifications Framework (SCQF Level 11) • contributes to the University’s Continuing Professional Development Framework for supporting learning and teaching and • is aligned to the UK Professional Standards Framework for Supporting Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (2006) and the Nursing and Midwifery Council Standard Framework for Supporting Learning and Assessment in Practice (2008)

Course Aims The aim of the course is to: • meet the needs of newly-appointed staff with academic or learning support roles  • meet the University's requirements of probation for academic staff  • provide flexible learning routes that are efficient, and which promote synergies between the student's learning activities and their work role  • promote enhancement of the learning experience of RGU learners.

  4. Course Design The course is: • self-paced and practice based • focused on personalised learning driven through a personal development planning negotiated with a Head of School/Associate Dean/Head of Department or nominee;- provides students with adequate opportunity to apply and practice concepts and activities associated with the course in their roles and work place- Mentor and DELTA tutor and peer support (online) • delivered and supported through an Internet Community Tool: Campus Moodle.

  6. Course Structure The course consists of two modules:Module 1: Teaching, Learning and Assessment in Context (30 credits)Module 2: Evidence Based Enquiry and Reflective Practice (30 credits).

Course Activities • Online activities and discussions • Case studies • Teaching practice - 50 contact hours to be logged for each module - 360 contact hours (or 12 weeks teaching) to be logged for both modules (NMC requirement) - Peer observation of teaching • Projects • Blended learning • Learning within a community of practice (Lave and Wenger 1998)

  8. Assessment • Innovative approach • Negotiated between student, mentor and tutor • Assessed by a portfolio of evidence comprising a range of activities: online discussions, peer observation of teaching, essay, project/case study report, etc. • Formative feedback and feed forward

Assessment: Module 1 Portfolio of Evidence • Teaching Philosophy • Transcript of satisfactory completion of online activities and discussions and confident and effective use of technologies in teaching and learning • Report on one peer observation of teaching • A critical essay/report of between 1500 – 2500 words

  10. Assessment: Module 2 Portfolio of Evidence Report on one peer observation of teaching *Project or case study report of between 3000 – 5000 words * Indicative topics include:- Higher Education Learning and Teaching- eLearning/Blended Learning- Research Supervision- Practice Education.

Professional Recognition Successful completion of: • Module 1 enables recognition as Associate of the Higher Education Academy (AHEA) • Modules 1 and 2 enables recognition as Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) • Nursing and Midwifery students also gain recognition as having achieved the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Teacher Standard and a recordable teaching qualification.

  18. Student Portal The Student Portal is a key resource which provides access to information and services and is available online at https://portal.rgu.ac.uk/. The Portal can be accessed using your standard IT username and password and it contains information on support services (such as Careers, the Library Service and the Student Association) and can also provide you with access to the Virtual Campus and the Outlook email system. Mitigating Circumstances and Coursework Extension forms are also available via the Portal.
