  2. What do they do? • A make up artist ensures that performers (models, actors, and presenters) have suitable make up before going on stage. • Some make-up artists specialize in fantasy and creature make-up, blending prosthetics, air brush, and traditional makeup techniques. • Make up artists who do not work in the entertainment field often find work in salons, and spa • Some offer bridal parties and special events like proms

  3. Working Conditions • Make artists who work for department stores, makeup manufactures, established television productions can expect to work regular hours, in a well lit, comfortable setting. • They can also expect to travel and visit private homes • They may have to deal with different weather conditions depending on the client.

  4. What do they expect to make • Depending on how many models requiring makeup, and the type of look created, a makeup artist can get paid from $500 to $2000 dollars per shoot • Junior makeup artists are paid hourly rates of about $15 dollars per hour

  5. What type of Education do they need • You have to take a cosmetology training class • Most spas and salons who employ professional makeup artists prefer applicants to have a high school diploma, and experience

  6. Pros and Cons of this job • You get the opportunity to work alongside highly skilled and often famous people • You may also travel internationally and enjoy a high degree of control over where and when you work • They are intimately involved in the most important and exciting events of people’s lives • Your designs have to be original • You may have to always start over • You may need to clear your schedule of everything for that day

  7. Above the line or Below the line? • Sadly, makeup artists are considered below the line • Make up artists work through pre-production and production

  8. Our Opinions • Kerri- I think that being a make-up artist would be a cool job, because you get to show your creativity in different ways. You also get to make sure that the performers look the part, not just act it. • Andrea-Being a make-up artist takes a lot of your time but if you are dedicated to it you can succeed and it is very interesting when you get to interact with famous people. Like any job being a make up artist is stressful but if you know what you are doing you will enjoy doing it.
