Here are your learning objectives for this reading: • What was the Freedman’s Bureau and what did it do? • What was life like for freed men and women? What were the steps for and away from full citizenship for African Americans?

How has the government’s commitment to “establish justice” changed over time? (How has the definition of “justice” changed historically to become more inclusive?)
