  1. Second Conditional • If he won the lottery, he would travel around the world. • If I saw a ghost, I would scream. • If she found a wallet on the street, she would take it to the police. • If I met the president, I would tell him to make investments in education.

  3. Wish • I wish she loved me. If she loved me, I would be very happy. • I wish I won the lottery. If I won the lottery, I would travel around the world. • I wish I were an outspoken person. If I were an outspoken person, I would have lots of friends. • I wish people didn’t use fossil fuels so much. If people didn’t use fossil fuels so much, we wouldn’t have the greenhouse effect.

  4. Wish Wish … [past simple]: I would like to have a different present situation. I would prefer things to be different now, but they can’t (or it is very unlikely that they will) be.

  5. Wish • I wish you would stop missing classes. (It is possible for you to stop missing classes.) • I wish my neighbour would stop practicing the drums after midnight. (It is possible for him to stop playing drums late at night) • I wish the rain would stop. • I wish the bus would come.

  6. Wish Wish...[would]: I would like to have a different present situation. But these things aren’t impossible by definition. Most of the time, you use this to complain about something annoying.

  7. Third Conditional • If I had studied for that test, I would have passed. • If she had seen the film, she would have liked it. • If we had invited him to the party, he would have come. • If you hadn’t eaten so much, you wouldn’t have felt sick.
