  2. Choosing Danielle as a subject for my photographs was easy: she is my younger sister and biggest supporter in my educational endeavors. Like me, Danielle has an interest in music and plays the drums. The environmental portrait (112 KB) shows Danielle seated at her drum set in her home recording studio, drum sticks in hand. I decided to shoot this portrait from many different angles and found that standing on a chair provided for the most flattering photograph of Danielle. The lighting was a bit of a challenge, as there were small windows emitting bright light behind the drum stool and it was not possible to shoot from the front of the drum set without the light interfering. Lighting issues were later corrected with Photoshop. Danielle is a professional makeup artist, so she applied her own makeup for the photo shoot. In the close-up shot (64.6 KB), her eyes are wide open, so it is difficult to see the unusual, pink and black, leopard-like design on her eyelids. Danielle does not like to smile and in the majority of the 98 photographs I took for the shoot she has a serious expression on her face. I chose this photograph because it displayed a different, playful side of her personality – one that people don’t often see. I wanted to make the most of the afternoon sun so we shot outside of her house on the patio, where the atmosphere was that of a party the night before (i.e., ashtrays housing cigarette butts and empty beer bottles). 3. As for posing, I researched and printed out examples of many poses of models and celebrities that I thought might work well for Danielle. It turned out, however, that the photographs showed more of her personality with natural poses taken at the “right” moment. We had some issues with her slouching as a result of back pain from scoliosis, but once she corrected her posture, such as in the environmental portrait, the photographs turned out well. Plus, the rule of thirds makes all the difference when it comes to getting the best shots. For the close-up photographs, I asked her funny questions as we shot, taking advantage of her various expressions; this worked well in making her comfortable and happy throughout the duration of the photo shoot.
