  3. Setting the Stage:What’s going on in Europe • Christianity is growing in popularity! • Priests have a job to push it! • SAVE the Non’s! • Convert them! • Crusades are going on • Definition?? • Series of Military expeditions to the Middle East • Who? • Why?

  4. Crusades= BUST! • 3 MAJOR Consequences: • 1) Increased desire to TRADE • What do they trade? • 2) More Power given to the Monarchs • Who are monarchs? • 4 Major Powers: • 3) Church loses power / respect • Christianity splits! • People leave! Get away from crazy Church- Cross the Atlantic!

Columbus • Approaches Spanish Kings for money • Claimed that he could find a route to: • By going: • Sets sail August 3, 1492- Oct 12, 1492 • First lands: ??? • Renames it – Island of San Salvador • Renames people: Called them “Indians” • Why?? • CC is recognized as the first person to discover America!!

It’s not the Truth! • CC Wasn’t the first • Leif Erickson- A Viking from New Foundland • He didn’t prove the earth was Round! • CC Wasn’t a Hero! • Held Native people captive (made them slaves!) • Forced them to work in gold mines • Sold young girls into Sexual Slavery • Rode natives like horses

  9. The TRUTH • Brought Guns, Cannons & Attack Dogs • Rip off arms and legs of people who tried to escape • First Slave Trader in the Americas! • Killed so many he had to replace them! • Brought Slaves from Africa • What do you think?
