  1. Nabucco Composer: Giuseppe Verdi

  2. ACT ONE: Jerusalem Set in 586 B.C., the opera begins at the temple of Solomon in Jerusalem. Nabucco, king of Babylon, advances on Jerusalem. The Jews are forced to hide in the temple. Nabucco’s daughter, Fenena, is being held prisoner there, having been kidnapped by the High Priest of Jerusalem, Zaccaria. Zaccaria, leaves Fenena with his nephew, Ismaele. Ismaele and Fenena are secret lovers. While they're alone together, a group of Babylonian soldiers charges in, led by Abigaille, Fenena's older sister, who is also in love with Ismaele. Abigaile offers to spare the Jews and Jerusalem if Ismaele will love her. Ismaele is unimpressed and rejects Abigaille. As Nabucco arrives at the temple, Zaccaria attempts to kill Fenena. Ismaele intervenes to save her. Nabucco orders the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem and the Jews denounce Ismaele

  3. ACT TWO: THE UNBELIEVER The Jews have been taken captive and are being held in Babylon. Nabucco has left for battle and appointed his daughter Fenena to act as his regiment. While he is away, Abigaille finds a document that proves she is not Nabucco's real daughter and she was born a slave. The Babylonians believe that Nabucco is dead based on a rumor started by the High Priest of Baal so they call Abigaille to take the throne. Zaccaria announces Fenena’s conversion to Judaism. Nabucco returns and proclaims that he is God. A flash of lightening then strikes Nabucco and he goes mad. Abigaille takes the crown.

  4. ACT THREE: THE PROPHECY The High Priest calls for the execution of all Jewish prisoners including Nabucco's daughter Fenena. Abigaille tricks the still mad Nabucco into signing Fenena’s death warrant. Nabucco denounces Abigaille as a slave. She rips up the document certifying her birth before the kings eyes. Hebrew captives, on the banks of the Euphrates, sing a song, yearning for their homeland (Va pensiero). Zaccaria predicts that the Babylonian empire will be destroyed.

  5. Va Pensiero(Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves) Lyrics: Va', pensiero, sull'ali dorate. O simile di Solima ai fati, traggi un suono di crudo lamento; o t'ispiri il Signore un concento che ne infonda al patire virtù "Va, pensiero" recollects the story of Jewish exiles from Babylon after the loss of the first temple in Jerusalem. The piece soon became a popular anthem for the Italian people, expressing their own longing for political freedom from Austria.   Translation in english: Fly, thoughts, on wings of gold; go settle upon the slopes and the hills, where, soft and mild, the sweet air of our native land smells fragrant! Greet the banks of the Jordanand Zion's toppled towers.Oh, my country so lovely and lost! Oh, memory so dear and despairing! Golden harp of the prophetic seers, why do you hang mute upon the willow?Rekindle our heart's memories and speak of times gone by! Mindful of the fate of Jerusalem, either sound a song of sad lamentation, or else let the Lord give us the strength to bear our sufferings! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWk-SelJroA

  6. ACT FOUR: THE BROKEN IDOL Nabucco is now held a prisoner. He sees Fenena being led to execution. In despair, Nabucco asks the God of the Hebrews for forgiveness. Nabucco frees the Hebrews. Abigaille poisons herself, begging Fenena for forgiveness, she dies. Nabucco is proclaimed King of Kings.
