  2. With estimated 81.8 million inhabitants in January 2010. • The 15th largest country in the world in terms of population. • Germany has 16 states.

  3. Population Statistics • 0–14 years: 13.7% • 15–64 years: 66.1% • 65 years and over: 20.3% • 10.92 deaths/1,000 population.

  4. In 1882, an architectural contest was held, with 200 architects participating. The winner was a Frankfurt architect, Paul Wallot. • Opened in 1894 and housed the Reichstag until 1933, when it was severely damaged in a fire. • The building caught fire on 27 February 1933, under circumstances still not entirely clear. • Paul Baumgarten reconstructed the building from 1961–1964. • The official German reunification ceremony on 3 October 1990, was held at the Reichstag building. • In 1992, Norman Foster won yet another architectural contest for the reconstruction of the building.

  5. The main hall of the parliament below can also be seen from the cupola, and natural light from above radiates down to the parliament floor. A large sun shield tracks the movement of the sun electronically and blocks direct sunlight which would not only cause large solar gain, but bedazzle those below. Construction work was finished in 1999. The dome is no longer open to anyone without prior registration.

  6. The six-story complex in the style of the Italian High Renaissance covers an area of about 43602 square feet, and its four towers are 131 feet high. “Dem deutschenVolke” (To the German people) was inscribed above the main entrance in 1916.

The practice is led by its founder and Chairman, Norman Foster, and has constructed many high-profile glass-and-steel buildings. • A few famous buildings he designed were Wembley Stadium, 30 St Mary Axe, and Torre CajaMadrid.
