  1. VERTEBRATE DISSECTION LAB 12 Rat Internal Anatomy - Digestive, Respiratory & Cardiovacular Systems

Review Protocols for preserved animals – • Talk with TA if you may be pregnant (or have problems with dissection) • all rat parts and tissues, original packing bags, and materials saturated with preservative (like paper towels under rat) go in RED BAGS ONLY • keep rat material out of the sinks!! • all other materials go in REGULAR TRASH ONLY, including gloves (rinse and turn inside out), paper towels, note papers

  3. Review Protocols for preserved animals – • gloves will be available each week; re-use face mask if desired • store in clearly labeled plastic zip-loc bag, in box provided by TA • mark male or female • wash desk with disinfectant and wipe • wash hands with soap before leaving lab • no scalpels; for dissection on preserved animal, scissors, fingers and blunt and sharp probes work best

  4. Review Protocols for preserved animals – • Be respectful of life and your community • Everyone must dissect their own rat; we strongly encourage students to examine many rats however! • **View rats of all sizes, sexes and reproductive states!**

  5. Digestive System • Fx: • breakdown of food; • absorption of nutrients (molecules!)

  6. Digestive System -PATHWAY • Oral cavity (mouth, teeth, tongue) • Pharynx • Esophagus • Stomach (rugae inside)

  7. Digestive System -PATHWAY • Small intestine (duodenum, jejunum, ileum) • Caecum=cecum (compare to appendix in humans) • Large intestine=colon • Rectum • Anus

  8. Digestive System • Salivary glands (note thyroid glands also) • Liver • Pancreas

  9. Digestive System • Mesentery; greater omentum (connective tissues) • (Spleen=recycling center for red blood cells; location near stomach and sm intest.)

Respiratory System • Fx: exchange gasses with environment • PATHWAY: •  Oral cavity / epiglottis •  Trachea / larynx •  Bronchi (Left and Right Bronchus) •  Bronchioles in lungs •  Alveoli in lungs (surface for exchange with capillaries) •  Lungs (view in situ in rat and cow lungs removed and dried) • Diaphragm • Muscles and bones of the thoracic cavity

Cardiovascular System (Circulatory System) • Fx: move blood through the body; closed circulatory system • Double loop circulatory system: right ventricle powers the pulmonary (lung) loop and left ventricle powers the body or somatic loop • 4 chambered Heart (view in situ in rat and removed, split beef hearts, models) • Left Atrium; Right Atrium (atrium = auricle; plural of atrium is atria) • Left Ventricle; Right Ventricle

Cardiovascular System (Circulatory System) • Veins (VeIN goes IN to the heart or towards the heart) • Arteries (Artery goes Away from the heart) • Capillaries (blood slows; exchange happens between blood and tissues; these are the small vessels between the smallest arteries and the smallest veins) • Lymph and lymphatic system

Cardiovascular System (Circulatory System) • Aorta; Vena Cavae; • Pulmonary Arteries (L&R); Pulmonary Veins (L&R) • Renal Veins and Arteries; • Coronary Veins and Arteries • From the information available, describe the PATHWAY of blood starting at the Aorta. How about starting at a capillary bed in the tail?
