Medical breakthroughs and river steamships allowed for foreigners to reach middle Africa. • In the 1800s European nations slowly outlawed the slave trade. • Many explorers explored the interior of Africa and started to map out Africa. • Missionaries accompanied the explorers and sought to win souls to Christianity. • The greatest known explorer-missionary was Dr. David Livingstone. For 30 years, he crisscrossed the African continent. Europeans Reach Middle Africa
