  1. After Test… • Please… • ***TURN IN TO BLACK TRAY*** • If you receive a star: Put it on your belly. • Work on Vocab #5. • Begin the study guide for TKAM. • Turn in any late essays to Ms. Haynam.

  2. On the notecard... • Name. • Guardian’s name, address, and number. • Activities you do at Revere. • Birthday. • Favorite candy.

  3. The Sneetches • Sit back and listen! • This is Dr. Seuss’ interpretation on racism.

  4. Blue Stars • How did the blue star people feel? • How did those without blue stars feel? • How did you personally react? • Were you proud of the way you reacted? • Who was in the wrong? • What does this have to do with real-life prejudice?

  5. Jim Crow Laws • Jim Crow Laws were a set of laws in the U.S. that enacted the “separate but equal” status for Black Americans. • The laws definitely made the situation separate, but not equal. • FYI: “Jim Crow” is the name of the laws because Jump Jim Crow was a white man in blackface. He would do a song and dance imitating Black Americans.

  6. Jim Crow Laws • Look over the Jim Crow Laws worksheet. • Which law really stands out to you?

  7. Scottsboro Trials

  8. Scottsboro Trials • TKAM is based on Harper Lee’s childhood. • One main issue in the novel is racism. • The other main issue is Tom Robinson’s trial. • His trial is parallel to The Scottsboro Trial.

  9. Scottsboro Trial • A trial on March 15, 1931 about nine boys who were accused of raping two women: Ruby Bates and Victoria Price. (They were prostitutes.) • They were looking for work and didn’t find any. The women, therefore, got on the train to go home. • The girls talked with a group of white boys. Later, a group of 12 black men got on the train.

  10. Scottsboro Trials • The black boys started bullying the white boys. They were making the white boys jump off the train. • 3 black boys jumped off the train, so only 9 were caught.

  11. Scottboro Trials • They were arrested for hoboing. • Hoboing was a common past time in the Depression. People would jump on the freight and travel to a new city for jobs or an adventure.

  12. Scottsboro Trials • Price said she was raped by 6 men and Bates by the other 3. • The boys were assigned a lawyer by the court. • His name was Samuel Liebowitz. • He was quoted, “Even the dumbest cop on the force would have spotted those two as tramps and liars.”

  13. Scottsboro Trials • The court decided to split the boys into 4 trials. • First was: • Clarence Norris Charlie Weems. DEATH PENALTY

  14. Scottsboro Trials • Next, on April 8, was: • Haywood Patterson DEATH PENALTY

  15. Scottsboro Trials • Next up was: • Olin Montgomery Andy Wright Eugene Wiliams • Willie Roberson Ozzie Powell DEATH PENALTY

  16. Scottsboro Trials • The last trial: • Roy Wright • Had to go back to Birmingham Jail. Deadlocked

  17. Scottsboro Trial • In 1933, 2 years later, Ruby Bates came back onto the stand. • She told the courts that she was never raped and that the men had never even talked to her. • She had gone along with Price, so that they would not get in trouble for sneaking on the train.

  18. Scottsboro Trial • Because of Ruby’s confession, the men received new trials.

  19. Scottsboro Trial • The next trial, 5 years after the incident, had black people on the jury. That way it was equal.

  20. Scottsboro Trials • So what ended up happening? • Haywood Patterson was found guilty, but only got 75 years. He escaped and left for Michigan. He was finally caught in 1950, but he remained in Michigan. • Ozie Powell was being walked back to prison and stabbed a guard. He was then shot in the head, but survived! The prosecution dropped his rape charges, but he still had 20 years for his assault. He got parole in 1944

  21. Scottsboro Trials • Then immediately, Eugene Williams, Olen Montgomery, Willie Robeson, and Roy Wright were all set free. • Clarence Norris got parole in 1946, but left Alabama anyway. • Andy Wright and Charlie Weems got parole, as well.

  22. “Pawn in Their Game” • Who was Medgar Evers’? • Active member of the NAACP. • He was killed after JFK’s speech about civil rights.

  23. Bob Dylan“Pawn in Their Game” • Listen to the CD and underline the lines that really catch your ear, surprise you, interest you, sadden you, or are meaningful. • What does this song mean? • What does a pawn in their game mean?

  24. For tomorrow • Vocab 5 is due. • Read and complete the study guide for chapters 1 and 2 of To Kill a Mockingbird for tomorrow. • Quia Punctuation homework online.
