  3. Present Consultant in Child Psychiatry at Harlow CAMHS Continue to be a visiting Fellow at Cambridge Now find it easier to collaborate in ongoing research More difficult to develop own projects Funding!!!!!

  4. MHRN I contacted the North London Hub Portfolio Studies Protocol –Does this interest me - Is this doable in my setting MHRN helped me contact the Chief Investigator Discussions: -Expectations -Resources available MHRN; CLRN and trust’s research and development department involved all through

  5. MHRN Approvals -Ethics -Trusts/Area R and D approval - Medical Director of the Trust Now: The study is up and running : We have recruited a few patients Merel and Kieran have been very helpful

Impact of ADHD Study Looking into the burden caused by ADHD on families, young people and education Also has an economic analysis component which will look into the cost of ADHD for the families Initial consent is taken by the clinician Once patient and families give informed consent , research nurse (Merel) takes over

Impact of ADHD Study She obtains written consent forms Is the point of contact for further information about the study On receiving written consent forms Questionnaires are sent to the family Take 15-20 minutes to complete Including screening questionnaires for ADHD ; ADULT ADHD screening questionnaire Gathers comprehensive information about the impact of ADHD from all members of the family

Impact of ADHD Study The young person nominates a teacher who then answers question on the perceived impact ADHD is having on the child and his/her education Takes around 20-25 minutes to complete Research team also needs to fill in a booklet summarising treatment and progress for the child All data is then uploaded onto a central database Principal Investigator maintains a site file in accordance to Research Governance Principals

Challenges of working with young people and families • Families are already struggling • To involve them in research –they need a lot of support and encouragement • Out of hours ; school holidays –Avoid exam time • Methodology-young people friendly –help from MHRN and Young Minds • Issues around consent and capacity

  10. Incentives • Evidence base is lacking—lots of research questions are unanswered • EB taken for granted in adults have not yet been replicated in young people • Much more incentive to do research in young people now • Lots of help available • Unfortunately , I am not aware of any ring fenced funding streams yet

  11. Other Projects Working with Cambridge to develop a study on transitions of young people and one on Neuroimaging young people with depressions Lots of barriers!!! Funding; Competition between Trusts etc Need a lot of patience and things take lot of time to develop!!!!!!!! Local Special Interest Group
