  1. Motor Learning and Penny Tossing? How does a coach teach skills? Why do some get it and some don’t? What types of practice works best?

  2. Recall and Review…. • Not all motor skills are alike • Closed Motor Skills • 1. Performed in a constant unchanging environment • Have the movement form as the goal of the skill • Figure Skating, Gymnastics, Diving

  3. Open Motor Skills • 1. Performed in a constant, changing environment • 2. Have a particular environmental outcome as the goal of the skill; the movement is a means to an end • Hockey, Basketball Volleyball

  4. What about the high jump? • The environment is stationary but the bar keeps going up?

  5. Golf? Is the swing the same regardless of club? • Wind factors? • Therefore some skills are on a continuum, with pure open and pure closed skills

  6. Where would you place Golf and High Jump? Pure Open ______________________Pure Closed

  7. Performing a movement a particular way is essential for success in closed motor skills • For open skills the performer must • 1. Perceive the environment • 2. Attend to the relevant features • 3. Decide what action is necessary • 4. Structure the appropriate motor program • 5. Execute the skill • 6. Evaluate the attempt • 7. Prepare for the next event-anticipate • For closed skills the performer must do only #4 and #5

Motor Learning • Definition; A relatively permanent change in ability as a result of practice and or experience • Learning is not directly observable • Only performance is directly observed. • However, factors other than learning can affect performance ( ie. Fatigue and other factors already mentioned in other lessons)

  9. Two Conditions Necessary for Learning • 1. The learner must know how well he/she is performing • -Must receive feedback about the movement execution • -Feedback can be info about the movement execution (KP) or information about the outcome of the movement (KR)

  10. 2. The learner must practice the skill • -Varying practice is important for learning (How should practice be varied?) • -BLOCKED vs RANDOM practice

  11. Blocked vs Random Practice • Blocked Practice- practicing the same skill over and over again • Eg. Shooting a basketball from the same spot

  12. Random Practice: varying the skill each time during practice • Eg. Shooting from a different spot each time • ***the implications of these findings for sport involving open skills (random situations) is that blocked drills in practice is not enough • Eg. Basketball, soccer,hockey, baseball

  13. Penny Lab will take 2 days to complete • Only doing the PRACTICE section today!!! • You will be placed into 2 groups • BLOCKED or RANDOM • All money needs to be returned • Act responsible • Complete entire worksheet • Hand in when completed
