Title here(Chosen Topic) John Smith, A.N Other, and A. Sleep. December 2002
Introduce your topic 1-2 pages • Use Format>slide layout to select each page. This one is formatted with a space for a picture on the left. • Any picture should be “JPEG” or GIF files and not TIFF or BMP which are often obtained from scanners. The file size is too big. Use scanner software to save as JPEG! • This is an example of a picture copied and pasted. It was then resized and positioned where I wanted it. I could adjust this text box size by dragging one of the little squares round the border of the text box. The text box can be moved by dragging the grey border round the textbox. • You can set up colour schemes for the presentation by Format>slide>colour scheme. Fig 1 Gram stain of Salmonella I put a text box (insert>textbox) here so that I could write below the picture.Holding the shift key while pressing the return/enter key allows a soft line break (no gap)
Introduction 2 • You can include charts. This one was actually • drawn in Excel and pasted in. This was added in a text box and coloured using format>textbox>fill Use a reasonable font size. The defaults in Power Point are for projection and are too large. On the other hand the normal 10 - 12 point used for printed work is too small. 14 - 16 point seems about right. You can adjust the point size by highlighting the text and selecting from the drop down menu at the left of the toolbar. This is 16 point This is 14 point This is 12 point. Don’t forget to label your figures. Use a text box for positioning
Consider including a case study as one of you papers if you can. This uses the two column slide layout. You can add text to the left column and the right column independently Summary of research on topic 2 - 4 pages If you use the two-column slide layout , and then select textbox to enter your text, you could, for example, put explanatory material which would interrupt the flow of the main text and colour the background.
Summary of issues raised by research (1 - 2 pages) • These are the issues raised in the research literature, not those raised by the media. • Use this section to provide a link with your report. In your report, highlight the issues that the media have picked up on.
Conclusions • Keep brief. A larger font may be appropriate here.
References • Use correct format. You are in the final year. You must get it right! • Web references should be directly linked. Highlight word and Insert>hyperlink. Copy and paste address from the browser window. Eg PHLS • If you are not sure about referencing format, check with the DISSC website.
