  7. The Arrow * * The index feather/vane is always a different color from the rest of the fletching to indicate which way the arrow goes on the string.

Archery Safety SAFETY IS ALWAYS FIRST PRIORITY! • Know and obey all range commands. • Keep your arrows in your quivers until told to shoot with the “one whistle” command. • Always keep your arrows pointed down to the floor or at the target. • Only aim and shoot at your target downrange. • If you drop an arrow, leave it on the ground until you are told to retrieve all your arrows. • Stand behind the waiting line when you are finished or not shooting. • Be sure no one is behind you when removing your arrows. • Walk back to the waiting line and return your arrows to your quivers after retrieving them. • Never fire a bow without an arrow (dry fire).

Shooting Basics 1 2 3 4 • Audio Cues: • One whistle blast, step up to the shooting line • Two whistle blasts, you may pick up your bow • Three whistle blasts, retrieve arrows • Steps: • Stand square to the target • Nock the arrow on the string below the nock locator • Hold your bow arm out with your elbow slightly bent and a loose grip • Use 3 fingers underneath the arrow and pull back to the corner of your mouth • Aim down the arrow to the target • Release the string letting it slip from your fingers 5 6

  11. Retrieving Arrows Wait for 3 whistle blows!! Make sure no one is behind you!! • One person at a target at a time • Place your hand in a “V” around the arrow • With your dominant hand, grip the arrow as close to the target as possible • Pull the arrow until it comes out • Place the arrow on the ground until all arrows are pulled • Walk back with the points in your hand and place arrows in quiver

Archery Has Many Faces • Target Archery - indoor/outdoor shoot where all archers stand on a line at the same distance and shoot in the same direction • Field Archery -a challenge course where archery targets are placed at different marked/unmarked distances. Targets can be up hill, down hill or straight ahead. Participants walk from target to target. • 3-D Archery -Similar to target archery, 3-D archery targets are on a challenge course. Distances are unmarked. Targets are in the shape of game animals.
