  3. WHERE TO START… Start your list of potential colleges, technical schools, military, and training programs that interest you. Familiarize yourself with college entrance, certificates or training requirements needed to pursue your goals. Are you taking the right courses to meet your college or career goals? How are your grades in those courses?

  4. High School Courses Taken Do Matter Colleges, Employers, Technical Schools want to see a solid foundation of learning that you can build on in the future. Recommended that you take five solid academic classes each semester. Start with basics, then move on to challenging yourself in advanced courses. Always check with each college, technical school, and training programs to learn their specific requirements.

WHAT IS DUAL CREDIT? • Dual Credit allows a student to fulfill high school graduation credits and earn college credit for the same class. • Should be noted: • Dual Credit is a Blinn class, taught by Blinn faculty, but on the Bellville High School campus. • Dual Credit classes follow the college calendar and adhere to college policies and procedures, specifically in regards to attendance. • Student will have a permanent college transcript.

DUAL CREDIT ELIGIBILITY • Completed sophomore year of high school • Grade average of 3.0 (B Average) • Must demonstrate college readiness with scores on the TSI Assessment or be exempt • State Law – Must have Bacterial Meningitis shot if attending class ON COLLEGE CAMPUS (unless qualify for waiver)

BENEFITS OF DUAL CREDIT • Earn transferable college hours* • Intellectual Challenge • May earn Performance Acknowledgement taking 12 college hours in all four college courses with a grade of A or B • Blinn ID • Earns access to all Blinn College facilities (library, student center, etc) and events (academic, athletic, music, theater) • Access to local area discounts where offered * Students are responsible for confirming that courses are required for 4-year college/university degree plans and/or accepted at a private institution.

CHALLENGES • Required to pass “college readiness” test • TSI Assessment • Requires strong self-discipline and self-direction • College courses can be demanding in the level and amount of work that must be completed • Failure in a class taken for Academic Dual Credit may affect high school graduation • Conflicts in college and high school calendars may arise • College courses require more time • Should consider extracurricular activities and scheduling conflicts before signing up • Dual Credit will cost money (tuition, books, supplies) • Payment plans are available

  18. COLLEGE EXPECTATIONS • Prepare for class in advance • Read text ahead of time • Study ... Schedule 4-6 hours per week per class • Know when to ask for help from your instructor • Participate and ask questions • Take thorough notes, do not count on review sheet • Attend class • Blinn College has an attendance policy. Must attend class to earn credit.

  19. GRADING • College is VERY different than high school • No progress reports, No report cards each six weeks • One FINAL GRADE, cumulative, will be posted at the end of the semester. This grade “as is” will appear on the student’s high school report card/transcript. The alpha grade will appear on the student’s Blinn transcript. • The student is responsible for following course syllabus, keeping track of grade and/or points earned during semester ...... AND keeping parents informed. • Teacher will not speak to parents, only student. • College grades are not mailed out.

  23. TSI ASSESSMENT • Three core areas: Reading, Math, Writing • Required for any incoming public college student in Texas, unless meet exemption • Mandatory Pre-Assessment Activity • Blinn College in Brenham is a testing facility

  24. PRE-ASSESSMENT ACTIVITY • Not scored • Designed to inform you about the importance of the TSIA • Sample test questions • Upon completion, a certificate will be emailed to you. This certificate must be presented with payment when taking the TSIA. No certificate, No testing.

  25. TSI REGISTRATION • Monday-Thursday: Walk-in testing begins between 8:00-11:00 am Administration Building (34), room 248. Submit Pre-Assessment Activity certificate to Enrollment Services and pay $45 with a major credit card, money order, debit card or cash. No personal checks. You will then be directed to the Testing Center. Bring a photo ID, Blinn ID #, TSIA Test Receipt and Test Ticket received from Office of Enrollment and PAA printed certificate. • Bellville Testing Days (on Brenham campus)- Saturday, February 23, 2019 and March 30, 2019 • Let the counseling office know which day you plan to test • Sign up online www.blinn.edu/testing/tsi-assessment.html (First come, first serve) by Friday noon before your chosen test date. 55-60 Seats Available • Bring Payment Receipt, PAA Certificate, Blinn ID #, and a Photo ID day of test. Report to Bullock Building 1000 College Avenue 8:00 am

DUAL CREDIT REGISTRATION • Blinn officials will be on the Bellville High campus to register students on April 10, 2019 • Pictures for Blinn ID’s will be made that day • The following items will need to be turned into the counseling office March 28, 2019 by 3:30. • Dual Credit Approval Form • TSI Assessment scores or SAT/ACT scores as proof of exemption • Transcript (Counselors provide) • Principal Permission Form (Counselors provide)

  42. DUAL CREDIT PAYMENT • Students are expected to set up and maintain their myBlinn account. • May attach personal email to Blinn email account • All correspondence from Blinn will come through the student’s Blinn email account • Payments may be made through myBlinn account or on Blinn campus
