  3. Subatomic Particles and Atoms • Proton – in nucleus: positive charge • Neutron – in nucleus: neutral charge • Electron – orbits nucleus: negative charge • Ion- charged particle (atom or molecule) • Atom – smallest unit of matter • Uses of ions – ion pumps, neural impulses

  4. Types of Bonds • Covalent – shares electrons • Ionic – exchanges electrons • Hydrogen bonds – between polar molecules (like water or DNA nitrogen containing bases)

  5. Chemical Formulas and Compounds • Cellular Respiration • C6H12O6 + 6O2 6CO2 + 6H2O • Photosynthesis is the mirror reaction • Organic Compounds contain carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen

  6. Enzymes • Enzymes attach to specific active sites on a chemical • The substrate (enzyme side) changes the shape of the chemical • Enzymes lower activation energy and speed up reactions

  7. Unique Properties of Water • Adhesion – attraction among molecules of different substances (ex. Water on glass) • Cohesion – attraction among molecules of the same substance (ex. Water drops) • Specific Heat – the amount of energy to change temperature of a substance. • Water has high specific heat

  8. Bonus: Flag Colors • Red – hardiness and valor • White – purity and innocence. • Blue – vigilance and justice
