  9. Smoke damage Severe fire

  10. Chip Pan Fires Don’t use water! More fires start in the kitchen than any other room in the house.

  11. Cooking Summary • Never leave cooking unattended • Turn cooker off before leaving room • Never trail electrical flexes near cookers or leave towels close by, ensure curtains are well away • Change chip pans for thermostatic deep fryers • The best way to avoid having a fire involving hot oil is to use a thermostat–controlled, electric deep-fat fryer • They’re safer to use – the safety cut-out (the thermostat) controls the temperature of the fat or oil FIRES START WHEN YOUR ATTENTION STOPS!

  19. Night Time Routine • Switch off and unplug all electrical appliances not designed to be left on at night • Stub out all smoking materials and always empty ashtrays Pour water over cigarette ends before putting them in bin outside • Put fireguards around open fires. Don’t build up a fire before going to bed • Switch off portable heaters • Close all doors. It will keep escape route clear from smoke and may stop fire spread • Ensure main door keys are to hand

  20. What If You Have a Fire? Having a FIRE ESCAPE PLANThink about how you would get out of the house if you were to have a fire, once alerted by your Fire alarm. All family members, including children should practise the fire escape plan, so households are prepared.

  21. Fire Escape Plan • Keep low. The air is cleaner and cooler near the floor • Never open a door if it’s warm to the touch • In flats never use a lift. Always take the stairs • If your clothing catches fire; stop, drop and roll. If it’s someone else, use a blanket, rug or thick coat • Don’t stop for valuables • Shout ‘Fire’ to warn family or attract the attention of passers-by • Never try to go back inside until a fire fighter tells everyone it’s safe to do so Remember: get out, stay out and dial 999.

  22. If You Can not Escape Safely! • If you cannot make an escape, gather all family members into a safe room, preferably at the front of the property and one which contains a telephone or mobile phone • Use a phone to alert the fire service; stay on the line to give directions for what room you are in • Close the door and use blankets or clothing to block the gap at the bottom • Stand by an open window and shout ‘Fire’ to alert neighbours or passers-by • Wait for the Fire Service
