The January 2012 CanNor Research, Innovation, and Commercialization (RIC) Workshop focused on improving economic development in Canada's Northern regions. Highlighting the role of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor), the workshop introduced various programs aimed at community and business development, policy advocacy, and strategic investments via the Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED). Key initiatives included the Innovation & Knowledge Fund and targeted Aboriginal Economic Development Programming.

SINED Yukon INNOVATION & KNOWLEDGE FUND • $2.5 million between 2009-2014 in Yukon • The I&K program is intended to focus on single or multi-sector innovation and knowledge projects that can assist in the development of different economic sectors within Yukon
SINED PAN-TERRITORIAL FUND $5 million between 2010-2014 ( $1.25 million per year) The Pan-Territorial Fund will be used for projects that include multiple territories or a territory and one or more provinces.
Aboriginal Economic Development Programming AED suite of programmes include: Community Economic Opportunities Program $345,783 • Increase community employment and related incomes, • Business Development • Development Land & Resources under Community Control • Development of Land & Resources beyond Community Control • Promoting the community as a place to invest • Research & advocacy Aboriginal Business Canada • Contribution Funds for Aboriginal Businesses
Aboriginal Economic Development Programming AED suite of programmes include: Community Support Services Program $189,879 * Technical resources & planning CEDP $340,032 * Economic Development support funding for three Indian Act Bands and Yukon Indian Development Corporation
Examples of Funded Projects • Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce Business Development Project $596,421 • GY: Cold Climate Cluster $200,000 ($600,000 in SINED 1) • $135,670 for the Klondike Visitors Association to develop a technology based tourism pilot project that will make the many attractions in Dawson City more accessible to visitors (TIP)
Examples of Funded Projects • North Yukon Economic Partnership: Eagle Plain Natural Gas Development: $300,030 • GY: Geological Survey investment of $3,504,000 for six geoscience projects over four years in Yukon • GY: Yukon Bureau of Statistics Business & Labour Indicators in Northern Economy $138,485

Examples of Funded Projects • Nunavut, NWT and Yukon: $3.5 million for pan northern tourism marketing campaign targeting southern Canada. • Yukon Department of Tourism: $2 Million over 4 years to promote Yukon targeting overseas (non-North American) tourism markets.
