  3. Japan Part of their territory and soil. Didn’t want to lose it. United States Strategically located between Japan and US military bases. Why?

  4. Japanese soldiers all expected to die. Fought from underground tunnels. Goal was to kill 10 US soldiers before they died. US sent more Marines to Iwo Jima than any other battle Dropped bombs on island first then troops sent in. Heavy Japanese fire made for chaos. Attack

  5. Japanese soldiers were hiding in holes. They were able to see and kill US troops, but US couldn’t see them. Island was made of loose sand due to bombing! Overcrowded because of so many troops on a small island. For 36 days it was the most populated area on Earth. Difficulties

  6. US wins control of the island. 1-3 American soldiers died or were injured. 23,000 US causalities 22,000 Japanese causalities. Raised the American flag on the top of Mount Suribachi. Becomes an icon of the War and is one of the most recognized images. Aftermath

  7. Japan’s Strategy • No survivors! All were expecting to die. • Fought the war from under the ground with many rooms and tunnels! • Soldiers suppose to kill 10 Americans before they died.

  8. US Attack • US attacked Iwo Jima more than any other territory. • Sent more Marines to the Battle of Iwo Jima than any other battle • 110,000 in 880 ships which sailed from Hawaii in 40 days. • Largest Naval invasion up until that time.

Feb. 19, 1945 • 2 a.m.US fired and dropped bombs on the entire island to begin the battle. • 8:30 a.m. the first US Marines land on the island. • Shocked by the loose sand (volcanic ash) and unable to dig holes for protection. • Hit by heavy Japanese fire and unable to land on the island in an organized manner…CHAOS!

  10. Difficulties of US soldiers • Japanese soldiers were hiding in holes dug into the ground. • They were able to see and kill US troops • US troops unable to see Japanese soldiers and defend themselves!

  11. Overcrowded… • The battle was unique • One hundred thousand men fighting on a tiny island one-third the size of Manhattan. • For 36 days Iwo Jima was one of the most populated seven point five miles on earth.

  12. Deaths and Casualties • Easy Company started with 310 men and suffered 75% casualties. • Only 50 men boarded the ship after the battle. • 36 days of fighting 23,000 American casualties and almost all 22,000 Japanese troops perished (1 in 3 American troops were injured or killed)

  13. After the war • Iwo Jima does not play as large of a role as once thought. • Huge causalities on both sides.
