  1. Alabama’s New Immigration Law Are you for the law or against it?

  2. First, we must ask why Alabama made this new law. • Alabama has about 130,000 illegal immigrants. • This means about 130,000 people that are not paying taxes, but using the benefits of things like police, firemen, teachers, etc.

  3. What if these 130,000 people did not have good morals? Is that true? Probably not, but it is a possibility. Alabama had to do something….so it did! It passed a new immigration law.

  4. What is the new Alabama Immigration Law? • It is a law that gives the police the right to question people that they believe are in the country illegally. • Those people must show papers proving that they are in the country legally or the right way. • If they did not come into the country to right way, then the police have the right to put them in jail.

  5. Police also have the right to check students in public schools to make sure they are in the country legally.

  6. Some people don’t like it because they believe… • Police will end up questioning people that did come into the country the right way and offend them. • It will make other nations and countries think Alabama is discriminating or mistreating people from their countries. • It will take too much of the police officers’ time when they need to be doing their other jobs. • Alabama farmers complain that no one will want to do the jobs of picking crops for the same pay that they were paying illegal immigrants. This is because illegal immigrants work for less money.

  7. What is happening in the state since the law has been passed? • Some legal immigrants have been placed in jail until police were shown papers proving that they were in the country legally. • Some illegal immigrants have moved to other states. • Some illegal immigrants have taken their children out of school. • Some people of different races are afraid to go in public because they feel they might be asked to show papers.

  8. So….what do you think? • Is the new law fair? • Should Alabama keep the new immigration law? • Does the new law help or hurt?
