Roman Art, Learning & Literature Romans learned the art of sculpture from Greeks Sculptures in Rome created realistic portraits Roman artists particularly skilled in creating Mosaics- design made from small pieces of stone or glass Romans philosophy of Stoicism borrowed from Greeks Roman writers promoted themes and ideas Poet named Virgil wrote most famous Latin literature The Aeneid- borrowed from Homers epic

Latin Language & Architecture Language of Romans remained language of learning in the west Official language of Roman Catholic Church Adopted and developed into French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Romanian Languages called “Romance languages” Master Builders Visitors marveled at architecture of Rome Arch, Dome, Concrete made up structures Ex: Coloseum and Aqueducts (Carried water to town) Architecture remained popular & influential Jefferson revived Roman architecture (US Capital)

Roman System of Law Most lasting contribution was law Early Roman law dealt with strengthening rights of Roman citizens Most important principles: Persons had right to equal treatment under law Person was considered innocent until guilty Person should be punished only for actions, not thoughts Any law that seemed unreasonable or unfair should be set aside
