  1. Introducing WhatsConnected v1.5 June 16th, 2009

  2. WhatsConnected Overview • Layer 2/3 Discovery and Mapping • Finds, classifies and inventories all devices on the network • Automatically maps full connectivity • Export maps and inventory information to WhatsUp Gold or Visio • Layer 2 Trace and IP/MAC Address Finder • Plug-in for WhatsUp Gold

  3. Introducing WhatsConnected v1.5 • Key New Features • Discovery of VMware Infrastructure • SSH & SNMPv3 Based Credentials • User Configurable Device Categories

  4. Terminology • Virtualization • Computer hardware was designed to run a single operating system and a single application. • Result: most computers are vastly underutilized. • Virtualization lets you run multiple virtual machines on a single physical machine, sharing the resources of that single computer across multiple environments. • Different virtual machines can run different operating systems and multiple applications on the same physical computer.

  5. Virtualization Virtualized Datacenter Environment Traditional Datacenter Environment Rest of the network Rest of the network 1 application = 1 server 5 applications = 1 server

  6. WhatsConnected Key Features

  7. VMware Infrastructure: Discovers, Maps and Inventories Uses Virtual Infrastructure Management (VIM) credentials Supports: ESX Server 3.5 VirtualCenter 2.5 ESX Server 3i. ESX Server 3.0.x VirtualCenter Server 2.0.x. Discovery of VMware Infrastructure

  8. VM Host Tab The VM Host tab provides detailed information on the VMware Host Server, including: Name: user assigned name for the virtual server Description: user assigned description for the virtual server Host OS: operating system of the host machine Model: vendor model name Vendor: vendor of virtual OS Version: version of the virtual server Build: vendor build version Discovery of VMware Infrastructure: Device Views

  9. Virtual Machines Tab The Virtual Machines tab shows all the defined virtual machines that are being managed by the virtual server (host). Information presented to the user includes: ID: ID assigned to virtual machine by the host Name: user assigned name for the virtual machine Guest OS: the operating system used in the virtual machine State: state of the virtual machine (running/not running) IP Address: IP address of the virtual machine (if discovered) MAC Address: MAC address assigned to the virtual machine Discovery of VMware Infrastructure: Device Views

  10. Discovery of VMware Infrastructure: Device Views • Virtual Machine Tab • The Virtual Machine tab displays the assigned information for an individual virtual machine. Information includes: • IP Address: IP address of the virtual machine • MAC Address: MAC address of the virtual machine • VMID: ID assigned to the virtual machine by the virtual host • Guest OS: operating system type running in virtual machine • Guest State: state of the virtual machine (running/not running) • Configuration File: name of the configuration file for the virtual machine on this virtual host • Memory Size: amount of memory dedicated to the virtual machine (in MB)

  11. Displays all discovered VMware infrastructure Export to both WhatsUp Gold and Visio Inventory information is also exported Discovery of VMware Infrastructure: Map Views

  12. SNMPv3 Discovery Full support of SNMPv3 security for discovery Strengthens WhatsConnected with the strongest possible authentication and encryption mechanisms Compliant with SNMP Security RFC 3826 SSH Credentials Requires usage of proper credentials to access devices SSH & SNMPv3 Based Credentials

  13. Device Categories Enhancements • Flexible Configuration • Users now have the ability to edit, add or delete device categories • Users can customize their view of their discovered devices by dragging and dropping device categories into any order they desire • All devices in a category and their associations are preserved when moving a device category

  14. Demonstration

  15. WhatsConnected v1.5 Benefits Summary Get the whole picture of your entire infrastructure Physical and Virtual Save time and resources No longer have to physically document your network topology and virtualized infrastructures Stay in control Know exactly what is on your network and where it is Secure SNMP discovery Security is enhanced with encrypted transactions between WhatsConnected and devices for discovery Enhanced device categories configuration
