Salty snacks eating, television or video games viewing and asthma symptoms among 10-12 years old children: The PANACEA study Background • Factors associated with a western lifestyle that have been implicated in the development of asthma include changes to dietary patterns, as well as the decrease in fruit and vegetables consumption and the increase in salty snacks and fast food intake which are high in salt and fat. • Salty snack consumption, as well as the amount of time children spend watching television or playing video games have been implicated in the development of asthma; however, the results arestill conflicting. Salty snacks eating, television or video games viewing and asthma symptoms among 10-12 years old children: The PANACEA study Serum Vitamin C (mg/dl) by Salad Intake Methods • Children and their parents completed questionnaires. • In order to evaluate asthma symptoms, children’s parents completed the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Children (ISAAC) questionnaire. • Food frequency questionnaires were completed and gathered information on a daily or weekly basis on 63 foods and beverages usually consumed in Greece and on the habits pertaining to mealtime behaviors. • Adherence to the Mediterranean diet was evaluated using the KidMEd score. Salty snacks eating, television or video games viewing and asthma symptoms among 10-12 years old children: The PANACEA study Serum Vitamin C (mg/dl) by Salad Intake Results • Consumption of salty snacks (>3 times/week vs. never/rare) was associated with a 60% higher likelihood of having asthma symptoms (95%CI 0.9-2.7), irrespective of potential confounders. • Mean hours of TV/ videogames viewing is 2.2±1.3/day. • The associations of salty snack eating and asthma were more prominent in children who watch TV or play video games > 2 hours/day.
