  2. A Little Bit About LCHS • Formed in 1960. We have over 50 years of experience in animal welfare. • Adopt out between 400- 500 homeless animals per year. • We double that number by providing animal transport (Rescue Rides!) for animals that are at risk of losing their lives due to space. • We have nearly 400 dedicated Volunteers and Foster Parents… and counting! • We are the Panhandle’s largest adoption guaranteed organization. • We are a 501c3 organization that is funded entirely by folks like you!   3. Minimum Requirements to become a Kitty Care Volunteer • Can volunteer the same day at the same time for at least 6 months • Fiercely dedicated to animal welfare! (That means spay/ neuter too). • Committed to Customer Service • Willing to get down and dirty- that means picking up puke and poo and all other unseemly things. Sunshine and Suzanne

All Kitty Care Volunteers Must… • Attend an Introduction Meeting- CHECK! • Attend this Kitty Care Orientation- CHECK! • Review, sign and return all waivers and acknowledgements in the Volunteer Handbook BEFORE your first Shadow Shift • Attend TWO Shadow Shifts with an experienced Kitty Care Volunteer to review all items on the Kitty Care Check-list. • Take the Kitty Care Check-list Quiz online. • Sign up for your first Kitty Care shift for the day and time you would like to volunteer on a weekly basis for 6 months. • After 90 days sit down with the Community Engagement Coor.

  5. All Kitty Care Volunteers Must Continued… • Sign up for weekly shifts on Volgistics. You will be given a log in and password AFTER you have completed your Shadow Shifts. • Join our LCHS Kitty Care FaceBook Page to share kitty stories and news! • Alert the Kitty Care Lead, and Community Engagement Coordinator if you are going to be out. You may also post on the Kitty Care Volunteer Group on FaceBook. • REPORT ALL BITES AND SCRATCHES OR OTHER INJURIES IMMEDIATELY, NO MATTER HOW SMALL AND FILL OUT AN INJURY REPORT FORM. It is at the discretion of the Executive Director whether an Injury/ Accident Report Form must be submitted. • Have Fun! The kitties appreciate you very much!

  7. Care for Kitties in our Colony Rooms and Offices/ Bathrooms • Every shift, please do the following: • Water and feed our kitties. They eat Science Diet Adult formula unless otherwise noted. • Change out all bedding and toys. These must be laundered with bleach every day to prevent the spreading of disease. • Scoop litter boxes, unless you are volunteering on Thursday/ Friday when we change out the litter and litter boxes entirely. • Sweep and Swifer the kitty room floor, especially around litter boxes. • Replace all necessary cleaning supplies and bedding. • PLAY OF COURSE! Teach these kitties ‘people skills’ that will • help them become more desirable to potential adopters.

Care for Kitties in our Kennels • Every shift, please do the following: • If the kennel is messy, move the kitty to an open kennel with a litter box, a toy and some water. • Deep clean the kennel with pre-mixed Dual-Quat, gloves and paper towels. DO NOT USE BLEACH IN THE KENNELS. • Change out all bedding, newspaper and toys. These must be laundered with bleach every day to prevent spreading of disease. • Scoop litter boxes, unless you are volunteering on Thursday/ Friday when we change out the litter and boxes entirely. • Water and feed our kitties. They likely eat a specialized diet, that’s why they are separated. Read their kennel tag for dietary restrictions. • PLAY OF COURSE! Teach these kitties ‘people skills’ that will • help them become more desirable to potential adopters.

  9. Kitty Care Rule of Thumb • If it is gross to you, than it’s gross to everyone! • Please make our kitties temporary homes as inhabitable as possible. • (That means CLEAN, like, really CLEAN). • This is for the health and safety of our kitties, our potential adopters and YOU!

  10. Kitty Behavior: Potential Illness You are our Eyes and Ears when it comes to our kitties. PLEASE report any of the following warning signs to the Cat Foster Coordinator immediately, as one of our kitties may be sick. Gorging or Fasting Lack of Grooming Unusually Bad Breath Abnormal Litter Box Activity Strange Sounds Too Much or Too Little Activity Sleep Pattern Changes Clinging or Shunning

Kitty Behavior: Happy Kitties! • Here are a few ways to tell if you are dealing with a Happy Kitty! • Vocalizations • Kitties will chirp, purr or meow to greet you. • Body Language • A happy kitty will give you a ‘slow blink,’ meaning, I love you! • Or a kitty may tuck it’s paws under it’s chest in a relaxed position , or roll over on its belly (this is sign of submission). • A kitty with it’s tale straight up with a slight crook at the top is a sign of delight.

  12. Kitty Behavior: Warning Angry/ Nervous Kitties! Kitties that are upset or nervous will give you several warning signs before they lash out. Leave a cat alone if you encounter the following: Vocalizations Growling, hissing, and spitting Body Language ‘Airplane Ears,’ kitties with their ears flat Against or behind their head. Wagging the tale Arched back, claws out Actively hiding Running away

  13. Kitty Behavior: PLAY TIME Our adoptable kitties rely on YOU to get the socialization they need to become well adjusted and highly adoptable. Kitties are natural hunters and that’s how they like to play. We need YOU to help get out some of their energy with the following: • Throw mousies and balls around the kitty room • Tease a kitty with a string or feathers • Use the BIRD to get kitties jumping and running • Use the GoGo Cat Catcher for kitties that prefer to stay on the ground • Play hide and go seek • with treats

  14. Kitty Behavior: RELAXATION TIME Our adoptable kitties rely on YOU to get the socialization they need to become well adjusted and highly adoptable. Kitties need cuddle time too. After a good play session, take some time to relax with our little furry friends. You know you deserve it, after all! • Have a cat sit on your lap while you read a book or the newspaper • Put light music on for the kitties, especially for those living in the kitty colony room downstairs • Show kitties your best ‘slow blink’

Our Adoption Process • Now that you’ve fallen in LOVE and you’re ready to take every kitty home, here’s what you need to know about our Adoption Process. • Every person interested in one of our animals must… • Fill out an Adoption Questionnaire • Meet the pet BEFORE adopting it • MUST HAVE ALL PETS FIXED • Must be willing to have an indoor only cat • Must agree NOT to declaw the cat • Our Adoption Process is best match based, not first-come, first-serve. • Once an Adopter has been approved, then they will set up a time to visit our office and complete the adoption contract. • Adoption Fee’s for Cats are: • $80 for Adults (6 months and older) • $100 for Kittens
