  1. Space Weather Activities in UkraineSummer 2011 Report Aleksei Parnowski Space Research Institute, Kyiv, Ukraine SWWT Plenary Meeting, Brussels, Belgium

  2. SWWT Plenary Meeting, Brussels, Belgium In brief • Space weather (SWx) related missions: • “Sich-2” EO S/C with “Potential” experiment will be launched in July 2011 • “Spektr-R” S/C will be launched in the end of July 2011 • “Chibis-M” S/C will be launched in October 2011 • “Environment” instrument suite will be delivered to the ISS in 2012 • “Microsat” S/C with “Ionosat-Micro” experiment will be launched in 2013 • “Resonance” S/C constellation will be launched in 2014 • The launch of “Ionosat” S/C constellation was postponed till 2015-2017 • Other launches this year: • “Phobos-Ground” S/C will be launched in October-November 2011 • 2 FP7 SWx projects with Ukrainian participation have officially started • An “I love my Sun” event was held in Ukraine for the first time • 3 SWx meetings were held in Ukraine and 4 more will be held this year • The National Space Agency of Ukraine (NSAU) was renamed into State Space Agency of Ukraine (SSAU); most subordinate institutions still have their old names (with NSAU)

  3. SWWT Plenary Meeting, Brussels, Belgium Sich-2/Potential • The main task of the experiment is the development of space environment diagnostics methods and testing the equipment in flight conditions.

  4. SWWT Plenary Meeting, Brussels, Belgium Microsat/Ionosat-Micro • “Ionosat-Micro” is the forerunner project with the aim to test the “Ionosat” mission scientific ideas and preliminary collection of related space data. It is scheduled for launch in 2013 onboard Ukrainian microsatellite “Microsat”. • Tentative “Microsat” orbit is polar LEO, ~500 km (TBC). • Project goals: • Spatial and temporal structure and global distribution of inhomogeneities in neutral atmosphere and ionosphere; • Global structure and dynamics of quasi-stationary electric currents, electric and magnetic fields; • Wave structures and turbulences at different spatial and temporal scales; • Synchronous experiments with ground support facilities – both active and passive ones.

  5. SWWT Plenary Meeting, Brussels, Belgium Microsat/Ionosat-Micro

  6. SWWT Plenary Meeting, Brussels, Belgium FP7 projects • Advanced Forecast For Ensuring Communications Through Space (AFFECTS), EC-GA № 263506 • PI: Uni Göttingen (Volker Bothmer) • Goal: Development of the European space weather alert and forecasting system • Timeline: March 2011 – February 2014 • Ukrainian partners: SRI NASU & NSAU • Problem-oriented processing and database creation for ionosphere exploration (POPDAT), EC-GA № 263240 • PI: TU Berlin (Klaus Brieß) • Goal: Creation of the ionospheric wave processes database • Timeline: June 2011 – June 2013 • Ukrainian partners: SRI NASU & NSAU with L’viv Centre

  7. SWWT Plenary Meeting, Brussels, Belgium I love my Sun • An “I love my Sun” event was organised by Space Research Institute in collaboration with Main Astronomical Observatory and Kyiv Planetarium in April 2011 in one of public schools in Kyiv. • 6 junior classes attended the lecture (about 180 children). The children were very enthusiastic. • Then, an additional lecture on geomagnetism was given for senior classes (about 150 children). • The experience gained in this event will be used to organise further events.

  8. SWWT Plenary Meeting, Brussels, Belgium Concluded SWx meetings in Ukraine since ESWW7 • Remote radiosensing of the ionosphere (ION-2011), 12-15 Apr 2011, Institute of the ionosphere, Kharkiv • 18th Young Scientists' Conference on Astronomy and Space Physics, 2-7 May 2011, Kyiv National University • Astronomy and Space Physics in Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, 24-27 May 2011, Kyiv National University
