Overview & Use of VPNs • Creates a secure network connection over a public network (i.e. the internet) or a private network owned by a service provider. • Large organisations such as governments may used VPN for secure networking and educational institutions will often use it too. • A VPN can connect multiple sites together over Wireless Area Network (WAN), even over large distances.

  3. WAN VPN • An example of VPN and WAN being used. WAN – connecting the sites together and it’s logical to use VPN technologies to keep the data secure and encrypted.

  4. Advantages and Disadvantages • Advantages: • Inexpensive way of building a private network. • Using internet as the main communication channel between sites is cost effective alternate to expensive private lines. • Can configure the number of sites on the VPN – flexible. • Disadvantages: • Quality of Service (QoS) is lacking over the internet, so this can cause packet lass and other performance related issues. • VPNs require a high-level of knowledge and understand to setup, and deploy. • VPN speeds are usually slower compared to traditional networks. (Dependant)
