How do we make an inference? We need to find clues to get some answers. We need to add those clues to what we already know or have read. There can be more than one correct answer. We need to be able to support inferences.
Read the passage and answer the question: “What is it Amir?” Baba said, reclining on the sofa and lacing his hands behind his head. Blue smoke swirled around his face. His glare made my throat feel dry. I cleared it and told him I’d written a story. Baba nodded and gave a thin smile that conveyed little more than feigned interest. “Well, that’s very good, isn’t it? He said. Then nothing more. He just looked at me through the cloud of smoke. I probably stood there for under a minute, but to this day, it was one of the longest minutes of my life. Seconds plodded by, each separated by the next by an eternity. Air grew heavy, damp, almost solid. I was breathing bricks. Baba went on staring me down, and didn’t offer to read. (P. 31) Why is Baba disinterested in Amir?
It says (Text clues) “His glare”- he is mad, he is not happy to see Amir, he is annoyed “he gave a thin smile”-that must mean a weak smile, maybe not a smile at all? “He just looked at me through the cloud of smoke.”-he doesn’t say anything, like he doesn’t care “Baba went on staring me down”-staring down sounds like he is angry or annoyed with Amir, or like he doesn’t care
I know (Background knowledge) I know he has often ignored Amir I know he seems to pay more attention to Hassan which is why Amir is so jealous of Hassan I know since Amir is not good at sports, and Baba is big and strong and great at sports I know his Amir’s mother died giving birth to Amir, and Baba loved her very much
So I infer (My inference answer) Baba is disinterested in Amir because he doesn’t think his son is anything like him. Baba is good at sports, and his son is terrible at sports and spends most of his time hiding away reading and writing. Amir probably reminds Baba of the fact that he lost his lovely wife. Baba spends most of his time ignoring Amir so he doesn’t have to feel guilty about feeling this way about his own son.
