Examples of Service Learning • Elementary School • Random Acts of Kindness • Students learn about service through structured lessons and by providing random acts of kindness. • Making Hygiene Kits • Students create kits of basic grooming supplies for people in need. This might be a good thing to do for the people in the Philippines affected by the typhoon. • Building Healthy Communities • Students learn about how to prevent childhood obesity.

Examples-Elementary (Con’t) • Senior Care • Students learn about providing services to assist seniors. • Homework Helper: Tutoring • Older students provide after school help to younger students. • Global Warming 911 • Students research an issue about global warming of their choice and propose solutions. • Peacekeepers • Students will learn about bullying and how to act as Peacekeepers on the playground, etc.

Requirements • Pick a project • Use one that you find online • Design your own • Plan it out on paper • Timeline/Schedule • Materials/Resources that will be needed/collected • Who is going to benefit? • Who is going to participate? • What learning is going to take place? • What curricular objectives will your project meet for your students?

  9. Requirements (con’t) • Planning (con’t) • How will you assess student learning? • How will you document the project and evidence of student learning? • Conference with Mrs. Frierman to get feedback • Provide weekly updates on progress via blogs.

  10. Requirements (con’t) • Get approval of cooperating teacher and internship principal. • Mrs. Frierman must have approved plan with signatures of appropriate personnel before you can begin.

  11. REMINDERS • You have NO BUDGET • If your project requires money, where will you get it? • Can you involve the school’s SCA or PTSA for additional resources? • NO FLUFF • Your project MUST relate to your class curriculum-SOLs or VBCPS Objectives

  12. Timeline-Adjusted • By December 4-Conference with Mrs. Frierman for feedback (can be done digitally via email) • December 6-Submit final proposal w/all signatures • January 31-Project finished • February 12-Electronic Presentation uploaded to weebly and presented in class.
