  6. I. Paradoxical Virtues (Luke 6:20-26)

  7. Blessed … “Blessed” is not how one feels (happy), but what God thinks of them. So to be blessed is to be approved and rewarded by God.

  8. Woe … “Woe” is the negative prophetic oracle. It introduces a warning of God’s disapproval and coming judgment.

  9. Blessed are the poor (in spirit) Attribute: Poor (in spirit) This word (ptochos) speaks of a wretched beggar. This is one who is dependent on the giving of others.  Blessed are you who know your deep spiritual poverty and realize you need God’s help.

  10. “Poverty of spirit is the personal acknowledgement of spiritual bankruptcy. It is the conscious confession of unworth before God.” … D. A. Carson This is true in justification. And it is true daily in sanctification. God is always opposed to the proud, but gives (pardoning, cleansing and enabling) grace to the humble.
