  3. Best Practice Model • Strengthening Families Program for Parents and Youth 10-14 Years • Developed in Iowa, studied original cohort intensively. 113 families mostly rural, mostly white in program, similar controls matched. Famous for its research base. • Imported to Washington State in 1999.

Recognized by federal agencies • National 4H Headquarters & Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service • Center for Substance Abuse Prevention Substance Abuse & Metal Health Services Administration • National Institute on Drug Abuse • US Department of Education • Office of Juvenile Justice & Delinquency Prevention

Spanish Program • By 2002, need for Spanish program was obvious. • Advisory Group affirmed the need. • Pan American Health Organization Spanish version was completed in 2003 in cooperation with the program developers. • WSU sponsored a training for Spanish program in February 2004. Eight (8) teams were trained to conduct the program in Spanish.

Keys to Success • Recruit and train bi-lingual Latino facilitators to deliver the program • Develop and adapt program materials to meet facilitator, parent and youth needs • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with program partners • Fidelity, but there are areas where adaptations can be made • Partnerships with community agencies

  9. When You Don’t Speak Spanish • Learn about the Latino culture • Get to know Latinos on a personal level • Examine your personal attitudes and beliefs about working with Latinos and immigrants • Get acquainted with staff of programs serving Latino families and youth in your community

  10. Go the Extra Mile • Attend as many of the program sessions as possible to provide support for facilitators and establish a relationship with Latino family participants • Treat Latino facilitators as colleagues and valued members of your Extension teaching team • Make yourself available and willing to put in extra time and effort

  11. Training • Training is required in order to be certified to teach the SFP • Training helps to ensure program fidelity • Facilitators learn the content of the program, evaluation and goals

  14. Evaluation Evaluation is about learning from our experience • For instance: • Are we achieving the expected outcomes? • Does the program work in this setting? • Are we implementing the program with fidelity?

  15. Spanish Language Evaluation • We have translated the evaluation into Spanish and use it for the Spanish-language programs • Latino parents report significant changes by the end of the program

  16. Participation - 2859 • Latino – 15% • American Indian – 6% • White – 51% • Other – 5% • Unknown – 24%

  18. Program Outcomes • Change from before the program to after (pre-post) is “significant” on all measures • These changes are the same (for statistical purposes) for the three major groups

  22. Future Research • Measure costs of programs to establish cost versus benefits • Explore relationships between outcomes and fidelity • Demonstrate effectiveness of Spanish-language program in large-scale longitudinal study
