  1. A TROPHY. This project is designed to give the students an understanding of the design process, basic design and drawing skills and basic practical skills which will enable the student to meet future projects and tasks with confidence.

  2. Criterion 1. Investigation. Why do companies have logos? Discuss amongst yourselves and give your answer below. On paper, sketch the logos for the London Olympics, Coke, Dell, MacDonalds, Shell and Toyota. Scan the drawings and insert them below

  3. Criterion 1. Investigation. Homework 1. 1. METAL 2. PLASTIC 3. WOOD Research. The three parts of the trophy are to be made from different materials. Wood, Metal and Plastics. Find two examples of each material type. Find out the name of the material and give an example of what it could be used for.

  4. Criterion 2 Design. Your own Logo What could your own logo be based upon? List four possibilities below and make a choice. Explain why you make that choice, Sketch out four different logos for your own use. Scan the sketches and insert them below. (Note. Limit yourself to no more than two colours) Identify the best one and explain your choice.

  5. Criterion 2. Design. Background Insert the chosen picture of your own logo into each of the four shapes below. The supporting shape needs to draw attention to the logo. Sketch four shapes and choose the best one. Explain your choice.

  6. Criterion 2. Design. Homework 2. Drawing skills On a sheet of A4 paper, draw ten X’s equally spaced down each side. Draw freehand straight lines between the pairs of X’s. Then draw much darker freehand lines between the first set of lines. Scan your work and place it in the folio. X X X X X X X X X x X X X X X X X X X x

  7. Criterion 2. Design. To draw a more complex shape, simply draw in More base lines. The three parts below can be made to form the basic shape for the trophy. Freehand sketching The most common form of freehand sketching is based on the isometric sketching system. In this system the 3 dimensional effect is framed in lines that are either vertical, or are at 30 degrees to the horizontal. A rectangular block would look like this. To start drawing in isometric, start with the three basic lines. You then can draw lines that are parallel to these lines to produce any rectangular block. Simply extend the lines to the required length and draw parallel lines to form the first shape. Practice this on a sheet of paper and scan the results onto the next sheet.

  8. Criterion 2. Design. Scan your drawings into here

  9. Criterion 1. Investigation. Homework 3. Materials II The materials we will use for this project are listed below. Find out what you can about The three materials used and write it in below. Wood - Pine. 2. Plastic - Acrylic. 3. Metal - Steel Define the following terms. Alloy. Hardwood. Softwood. Thermoplastic

  10. Criterion 1. Investigation. Joining materials. Materials are joined together in many ways. Write down five different ways in which materials can be joined together. Describe the process and some details of the method. Make a decision on what method you will use to join the metal to the plastic and the plastic to the wood. Justify your choices.

  11. Criterion 1. Investigation. Evaluating the project. 1. METAL You will need to evaluate your project and the Design Folio once it is complete. Write down below for each stage in the design process some of the things you will be looking for when you do this. !. Investigate. Design. Planning. Creating. Evaluating. 2. PLASTIC 3. WOOD

  12. Criterion 3. PLanning Planning the make. Planning how to make something will involve the production of a set of instructions that would tell someone else, how to make the product. In this case there are three different item to make and then the process of joining the three parts together. You will need to make the plan in the form of annotated sketches.. Make a sketch for each stage with accompanying notes. Scan them and insert the images over the next two sheets.

  13. Criterion 3. PLanning Planning II

  14. Criterion 5 Evaluation Evaluation1. Evaluate the finished product by looking at each of the three pieces individually. Make comments on how well each of them were made and how you would improve on it if you were to make it again. Take a photograph of the finished product and insert it into this sheet.

  15. Criterion 5 Evaluation Evaluation II The Design Folio also needs to be evaluated. For each of the sections in the folio (Investigate, Planning, creating and evaluation ) make a comment on the quality of the work and on the thinking behind the work.
