Principles of Proper Discipline • Effective discipline must be: • Consistent • Timely • Intensely unpleasant, but just • Based upon principle of right, not selfish interest or desire for domination • Born of love for & betterment of child, not parental venting of anger (Eph. 6:4) • Same principle is true of proper rebuke seeking to correct evil & wrong

Focus Of Tonight’s Lesson: • To study the responsibilities & function of each member of the family • Husbands - the kind of leadership God expects • Wives - the meaning & demands of subjection • Parents - duties to love, teach & discipline • Children - obedience to parents & sibling duties • Grandparents - responsibility of proper example • When each member meets responsibility given, family functions well • When any part fails, whole family suffers

  9. Role of Husbands

Ephesians 5:23-33 23For the husband is the head of the wife, and Christ also is the head of the church, being himself the saviour of the body. 24But as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives also be to their husbands in everything. 25Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself up for it; 26that he might sanctify it, having cleansed it by the washing of water with the word, 27that he might present the church to himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. 28Even so ought husbands also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his own wife loveth himself: 29for no man ever hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as Christ also the church; 30because we are members of his body. 31For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh.

Duties of Husbands Summarized • Love wife with a superlative degree of love • As Christ loved & gave Himself for the church • As a man loves his own body (Luke 6:31) • Leave father & mother; cleave to wife - primary • Take responsibility of headship in family • Leaving father & mother implies new place • Headship is not function of selfish domination • Must be sacrificial in leading to best for family • Be concerned about well-being of wife • This is necessarily a part of love commanded • Responsibility to “cheer” wife is principle • Opposite forbidden of being bitter against them

Role of Grandparents & Grandchildren Summarized • Grandparents are to cherish grandchildren • Grandchildren are to honor grandchildren • Relationship provides a link with a heritage left in the “name” given • Importance of good name (Eccl. 7:1) • Example of Israel blessing sons of Joseph (Gen. 48:11-16“let my name be named on them”) • Faith present in previous generations helps • Provides greater depth of teaching to children • Provides association with believers as the norm
