  13. About MEDLIFE MEDLIFE depends completely on supporters like you to fund our work. Mobile Clinics such as the one I will be a part of this summer have provided tens of thousands of patients with much-needed medical care. For patients who have more serious medical conditions, we have staff to make sure these patients get the care they need after my visit ends. In addition to providing excellent medical care, MEDLIFE gives students the opportunity to have a meaningful and positive impact on the lives of other while learning about the realities of global health. Our staff in Ecuador and Peru strive to ensure not only that our Mobile Clinics deliver the best possible care to our patients, but also that all participants have an educational and meaningful experience while they contribute first-hand to our efforts. In the 2009-2010 academic year alone, MEDLIFE was able to bring a doctor and medication to over 7,000 people in Ecuador and Peru who lacked access otherwise. This past summer, MEDLIFE delivered specialized follow-up treatment to 12 patients who were in desperate need of medical attention. One of the people we have helped is Darwin, who was 4 years old when he first met members of a MEDLIFE Mobile Clinic. He was immediately diagnosed with an inguinal hernia, but he was too sick for surgery because he also had pneumonia. MEDLIFE arranged for him to have ongoing care with an Ecuadorian doctor who treated his pneumonia. On January 1st of 2008, Darwin received the surgery he needed. He was released from the hospital and is now back home with his mother, who is raising Darwin alone and works in agriculture. She is so grateful and sends a special “thank you from her heart” to everyone at MEDLIFE who helped to make Darwin better when no one else would. $25 provides twenty-five medical consultations. $150 hires a doctor for one week. $500 buys medicine for a one-week Mobile Clinic. $1000 can help a child get heart surgery. All donations, large or small, help patients like Darwin in Ecuador. We urgently need your help. By supporting MEDLIFE, you are saving lives now and training the next generation of medical professionals to understand the complex healthcare needs of underserved populations all over the world.
