The Three-D Approach Designation – All human space has some designated purpose. • What is the designated purpose of the space? • What was it originally intended to be used for? • How well does the space support its current use? • How well does it support its intended use? • Is there a conflict between the actual and intended use?

How do you feel when you walk down a dimly lit street at night as compared to your reaction to the same street at midday? 3. How do you react to a group of boisterous young people in front of a video arcade as compared to a group of boisterous young people standing in front of a house of worship? 4. Reactions are apt to be different because the settings are very different.

  14. Asking the Right Questions • Never look at the environment the same way again. • Question everything, no matter how trivial. • Learn the language of the professions you are working with and you will understand their motivations.

  15. Competing CPTED Strategies • CPTED-Organized and Mechanical Approach vs. Natural Approach • Defensible Space • Environmental Security • Security By Design • Natural Crime Prevention • Safer Cities • Situational Crime Prevention • Place-Specific Crime Prevention • Design Out Crime

  18. Safe and Unsafe Environments Points to Consider • Is time of day an important variable? • Does familiarity with the environment impact perceptions? • Does professional or personal experience impact • perceptions? • Can people feel safe in unsafe areas and unsafe in safe areas?
