Simplified LCA Tools for Textile Industry: A Model for Easy Data Handling

This project aims to develop user-friendly tools for assessing environmental impacts in textile production, create new inventory data, and support public purchasing. It includes an Excel model for simplified LCA, CAD model, LCA database, and site-specific data. The project involves setting up Excel models, data collection from participating companies, and calculating environmental impacts. Future plans include database administration for members to access online for calculations. Funding challenges may hinder expansion to a European project, but the potential for knowledge exchange is promising.

  1. A model for easy handling of LCA data in industry Maria Walenius Henriksson

  2. Objectives • To develop simplified tools for assessment of the environmental impact of the production of textiles in the industry • To generate new inventory data from the Swedish textile industry • To form the basis for future public purchasing

  3. Potential participants? • Dye-houses • Clothes manufacturers • Manufacturers of technical textiles • …

  4. Excel model for simplified LCA Indata

  5. CAD (Computer Aided Design) model • LCA-database • General data • Site-specific data PDM (SmarTeam) http://www.smarteam.com/homepage.asp Design Calculation of environmental impact Results

  6. Flowchart of project • Informative meeting • Set-up of Excel-model for demonstration • Visits to some of the participating companies to collect data and demonstrate the Excel-model • Calculations and preparation of collected data for Excel-model

  7. What happens after the project? • IFP Research will administrate and update the database (probably internetbased) • Members will be able to login on the internet to make their calculations • Membership fee? • Who supplies new data?

  8. Could this be an idea for a European project? • It is still difficult to get funding for the build-up of a database • Could it be worthwhile to try as there would be some ”knowledge transfer” and ”exchange of country-specific data”? • What type of project?
