  2. Why People Join a Group • Attraction Theory explains why we may join a group in four possible reasons. 1. You may enjoy what the group does. (Bowling) • You may agree with the goals of the group. (college scholarships) • Just the idea of being a member of the group may motivate you. (Family fraternity) • You may like one or more of the group members. (Chuckie belongs, so I do too)

  3. Why People Join a Group • Reasons why people communicate in Groups (Interpersonal Communication Motives): 1. Inclusion- Sense of belonging 2. Affection- feeling liked and liking others 3. Control- having power to manipulate the environment 4. Escape- to avoid other activities or stressful situations 5. Pleasure- to have fun 6. Relaxation- to unwind and lower anxiety

  4. Why People Join a Group • Lack of Volition • This means we do not have a choice. Your job, your class requires that you work in a group. • Sound Familiar???

  5. Small Group Socialization • Defined- a two-way process of influence and change whereby group members use verbal and nonverbal messages to create a new unique group culture. • Establish rules, tasks, norms, roles, goals, etc.

  6. A Model of Small Group Socialization • Five Phases: • Antecedent Phase • Anticipatory Phase • Encounter Phase • Assimilation Phase • Exit Phase

  7. Outcomes of Socialization • Cohesion- a member reaching an acceptable level of desire to stay in the group • Consensus- all agree members agree with and commit to the decision • Communication Satisfaction- walking away from group meetings feeling positively fulfilled • Loneliness- Powerlessness felt from not being able or allowed to participate in the group process

  8. Socialization Guidelines for a new Group Member • Embrace the values, norms, and behaviors established in the group • Acquire the skills and knowledge needed to assume appropriate roles • Learn what is and what is not important • Move from a non-performing member to a contributing member

  9. Socialization Guidelines for an existing Group Member • Recruit individuals who will fit in and contribute to the attainment of group goals • Initiate new members in formal orientation sessions or individually in work group • Include the new group member in group activities • Engage in a mentoring relationship with the new member
