COMP 101 READING REVIEW Pg 36-55--Critical Thinking (focus on Ethos, Pathos, Logos) --Analysis—break into parts (cost, community) --Synthesis—combine information in your own way --Evaluate—judge what is best for you EVIDENCE—your opinion is not evidence. • Your opinion isn’t valid until you prove its validity • Call people and admissions people

  3. Pg 36-55--Critical Thinking (focus on Ethos, Pathos, Logos) • LOGOS—appeal to mind (logic), facts--COST • PATHOS—emotion—HAPPINESS • ETHOS—audience ethics—AUTHOR CRED

  4. Pg 658-674--Working With Sources • Keep a list of sources (APA style on pg 661) • Paraphrasing strategies—pg 671 Pg 697-704--Evaluating Sources--Review—need to know it

  5. Pg 705-716--Citing Sources, Quoting, Paraphrasing • Pg 706—3rd row and 4th row • When you start writing use this section to make sure you quote right. • Basically just write without using research THEN throw it in where it backs up your opinion

  6. Going in the Deep End (Starting the Plan) • Get out 4 pieces of notebook paper 2. Write out the headings for your report on a separate sheet of paper (1 heading/page) 3. Fill in your own thoughts underneath 4. Tape or rewrite notes onto that page

  7. CHARTS and GRAPHS • Use with anything that is numbered • Cost • Student/teacher ration • Use with anything visual • campus, • Location • Use color and shading to separate material • Look at charts in the book for examples

  8. OUTLINE ASSIGNMENT • You now have a basic plan • You may want to redo it and make it neater or easier to understand • HW—Outlines due next class

  9. Edit Outlines • Where does the person appeal to logic? • Emotion? • How do they show credibility? • Are charts easy to understand • Anything that needs a graphic that they haven’t created • Evaluation clear?—if not at this stage that’s fine.

WRITING TIPS BEFORE DRAFTING • Active vs Passive • Paramedic method will help (wait 5 minutes) • Avoid This and That—they are unclear and lead to serious confusion & miscommunication • Use citations in your draft (and outline) • Coulter pass out APA cheat sheet • Use the owl website • Use your book

  11. Paramedic Method—How to Write Clearly • Circle the prepositions 2. Circle the forms of “is”: Is, am, am be, been 3. As “who is kicking who?” (Subject verb) • Put the “kicking” action in a simple active verb • Check your answer—count the number of original words and then double check that you have fewer than you began with. (good to shoot for a minimum of ¼ shorter if not more while still retaining the meaning)

Draft #1 • Don’t worry about perfect writing in your first draft—just write from our outline • When you self-edit then check for clarity, passive voice, this/that, etc. • For draft #1 • Write your information • Have and APA bibliography • Have basic charts ready to go • Make it look like APA report format • Sample #1 • Sample #2 • Sample #3—best for you

  14. Draft #2/3 • You’ll add an abstract (fancy word for summary) • You’ll add a title page • You should have a conclusions section (pretty long) • References page complete • In text citations
